I thought the same until someone went through the maths - especially the labour involved. Did I read 2000 hours at Alfaholics?
Alfaholics does four cars a year and I believe there’s a multi-year waiting list.

Carbon bodied SZ would be quite something.
It’s a surprisingly porky car, and the bonnet weighs a bit like the average moon.

That's what happens when you stick think glass fibre to an already heavy steel 75 frame

The Alfa’s lovely... What pisses me off about these resto mods is the eye watering sums involved.. I’d rather have one, and it could be any of: evo37, alfaholics, singer, Jensen interceptor R, or almost anything by Retropower - than almost any modern supercar, but when you’re talking 400 grand even 200 grand it just takes the ****... sub 100 you could at least let yourself dream
Which begs the question, are they that price because Sir has deep pockets and wants to show off his success (or gullibility!) or is there a lot of design/material and labour costs going into this?

Precisely.... the only one I can comment on is Retropower (see YouTube) their work is great, but it always looks like most of the time is spent on restoring, then they mess with suspension, brakes and drop in modern or modified engines. But the cost always seems disproportionate... they are coy, but let slip at one point the job on an RS2000 was 'six figures' excluding the car.... now I know a mk2 escort is a pretty simple car to restore and that one was pretty original in spec IIRC. It shouldn't cost that much. IMHO

I reckon my Vette would cost at least £150k if you wanted someone to build it for you.

Swiftune will relieve you of over £20k for an engine so you can go banger racing at Goodwood. A 2.0l 911 engine is £100k for your posh one make Peter Auto series.

It doesn’t cost anymore to paint a 250GTO than it does an Alfa if you want the same standard.

I remember being shocked to discover when I had a Peugeot that they were charging £50ph when Ferrari at the time were charging £40ph.

The hours to restore a car properly are monumental.

That's a good point about costs to spray a car. Although you wouldn't want an apprentice spraying a 250 GTO so an experienced painter will only suffice and that where costs (or superstar pay) come in.

In my view its all about usability and balance, I like the idea of a stylish classic with some modern comforts but I wouldn't want to take it too far from the original as to me half the fun of a classic is the driving experience. The modified Alfa 105s at over 300k are awesome cars but to use most of the upgrades you need to be on a track, in everyday use is one any better than Batmans old TS engined Giulia saloon which I was tempted to buy at around 12k. Even today a sorted 105 with TS power, decent suspension & brakes and a modern bluetooth sound system hidden away can be had for well under 100k. I always wanted a Fanalone Fulvia, now circa 100k, but in real world everyday use is it 5 times better than my 1.3 Montecarlo? Maybe it is but I get all the fun I want from it and nearly everyone who see's it thinks its a HF.

As much as a relatively new modern interests me I just can't justify the cost and hate the idea of just driving a blob like everyone else. Andy old 325i does everything I need it to and its going up in the cool stakes, a decent E24 or and UR Quattro would be the next level and I would much rather invest 20-40k in one of those that will retain value.
