Reverse overhaul kit

When I purchased my car the PPI said

* The reverse switch `detent` doesn't seem to be working correctly, but it selects reverse perfectly well (the detent is a device that's built into the switch to stop you knocking the reverse lever accidently whilst driving, and approx 90% of 4200's we see here have the same issue!)

Initially it was difficult to engage R but now its fine. However, whenever someone else drives the car they have problems engaging R. Visited Bill McGrath today and was told that it would eventually break leaving you stranded. They said there is a kit to fix it without having to replace the whole thing which is £££. Anyone come across this..?

Thanks

That really is of interest Brendan; keep us up to speed if you find it, mine has recently glitched a few times and it feels like the return spring has failed or is failling.

I will say that if you get a reverse selection error on the gearbox. It will give you all the forward gears but no reverse. check the switch is fully forward and manually roll the car backwards with the engine running; just a foot or so does it. It's a bit embarrassing but gets the error cleared. Don't know what you would do if you were parked down a slope where reverse is the only way out!

Never had to lift mine, didn't think it was an issue!

That is a lot of money for a simple piece of metal in my books....

This is very similar to the QP...which also has the same known issue!
First time mine went, I found a new part in the states and fitted it myself, very easy, but still came to around £400,
recently it happened a second time, this time the the plastic cracked, so it still functioned ok, but I had to replace it...
Hill engineering do a kit, which I bought, and fitted, again very easy to do and this time the plastic is anodized aluminum,
so hopefully that is the last time it will need doing...
unfortunately, I did not take pics, but if anyone needs any tips, just let me know.
Here is the part I am referring to:
