Road Trip to Italy

I suspect traffic will be a lot lighter if you take a more southerly route through Belgium past Lille and into Germany by Luxembourg. That avoids the pinch point of Antwerp or Brussels. My QPV GTS would achieve 25mpg at 85mph cruise and that route is c330 miles so within a tank. The easiest alternative is to Saarbrucken via Reims, which is about 25 miles further plus tolls but should be even less traffic.
It’s all about bladders...the last pee stop is Calais and according to Waze the shortest time route is via the ring road around Brusssels and into Germany - Saarbrucken is an hour longer which plus the tunnel - pushes us past the wife’s bladder tolerance! We aim to leave Calais before 7am...

Got it! Timing is everything in Belgium. Checking Waze on a Sun am is very different in rush hours (am and pm). As I read it, you can stop to 'stretch legs' at rest areas but not service stations. Pretty sure many have a toilet (used to be a hole in the ground but the French must surely have moved on from those!). Currently planning to visit my sister in Italy so looking through the options too! Fussen and Nauders then the lakes seems a popular route among petrol heads.
