So I recently took my 2010 Quattroporte to a well known independant garage in Essex for a service.
I have used them before on a few occasions.
The job was an annual service and I was quoted £900.

The owner phoned me the next day to tell me the car was in a poor state and needed the following doing............
ns and os front shox bushes £128 plus £170 labour
osr lower ball joint £900 plus £255 labour
nsf track rod end £162 plus £118 labour plus geometry £450
rear discs and pads £450 plus £250 labour
osr shox and bush £1000 plus £120 labour.
(That is £2840 parts cost when Eurospares cost would be £2364) make of that what you will.
Total bill was going to be in excess of £6500.
(He also reported car needed two front tyres and that was absolutely correct.)

I told him that car was only worth circa £9000 so I wasn't going to have work done (except service which had already been started).

Something didn't ring right and as I keep all my bills I checked and saw that rear discs and pads had only been changed two years previously. They surely didn't need changing again just two years later?

My wife suggested I have a health check done at Lancaster Colchester so they could check accuracy of the report.

This was done yesterday and the car came back with a totally clean bill of health. They sent me a video of the car report and it was virtually nothing wrong.
Couldn't understand this so I spoke with service advisor and then told him what other independant garage had said about some suspension parts just a few days previously.
They put their (different) top technician on a re-check and are adament that reported faults do NOT exist.

Can someone tell me what they think is going on here.
For full disclosure the same independant reported a new wishbone reuired on my 4200 a few years ago, I did the same thing then and Lancaster Colchester said it was NOT cracked and didn't need changing. At the time I put this down as a mistake but now I am not so sure.
Comments anyone?

Oh dear that's not could and sad to say it's usually the experience of people on here that it's the dealership trying to take advantage rather than an independent.

Are you sure they’ve got the right car? Sounds facetious but that’s quite an upsell, if it was dodgy wouldn’t you just go with one or two from the list and the customer would be more likely to suck it up? o_O

Email the independant that quoted for all the work the health check report and ask them for comment.

Aside from the hiked up parts prices. Geo £450 ?? I think i was charged around £200 last time at an independant specialist.

If the car wasnt already in there at the time it would sound like they were trying to price themselves out of the job because they didnt want the work.

You could always go down the trading standards route depending on any reply you get after sending them a copy of the health check.

Sad that an independent is possibly not being as honest as possible, have heard of lots of main dealers trying it on but usually independents are a bit better than that…. Bit short sighted really when the community of Italian car enthusiasts is so small as well…

So the Main dealer speaks the truth and the indie is ripping you off….you are right - there is a disturbance in the force!

Surely no one is that **** stupid as to quote an additional 5 grands worth of work for some extra pound notes?

I mean if a garage is in the habit of ripping people off the ‘safe’ way to do it is quite the odd small item, don’t replace and pocket the cash?

But your experience is just thick as mince?

Well there's always a chance of someone deciding to take some kind of action. To be absolutely clear, my suggestion was a guess. A well known independent operates from premises very near Eurospares. Several members here have had nothing but positive experience. My experience was absolutely the opposite. But I cannot (and to a certain extent will not) name them until @Phil the Brit does.
A) I could be wrong. There are a couple of other indies in Essex
B) I'm not going on record as saying someone (a company) did something that is (on the face of it) very poor form at the very least without some kind of confirmation that it was that company.

Has taken me 10 minutes on Google Maps to decode the (potential) slanders on this thread.

The motor trade is full of chancers taking advantage.

A few years ago, a well known but now defunct independent specialist tried to tell me I needed new drop links, and when I pointed out that they had billed me for replacing them only a year before, they basically said, "So sue us and see how you get on".

I left my very local tyre guy put my winters on for me, and when I came back told me the summers were beyond use and he had binned them. I said that was odd at only about 3,000 miles, and made him get them out of the skip and give them back, as they were absolutely fine. Not going back there.
