Top end rattle at start up

Mine has always had what sounds like a tappet rattle for a few seconds on start up. I was a bit worried when I first bought it at 37k miles and had the oil flushed out and refilled with good stuff. The problem remained but usually only if the engine has not been run for a while (a week or more). At 60k miles it is still the same. I believe it to be just one of the hydraulic tappets in a slightly slack bore and the noise stops as soon as the pumped oil gets to it. Although I hate to hear it, it no longer worries me much.

Good news to report on this and thank you again Paul for beginning this thread.
Had a new non return valve fitted during an oil service. Rattle is now gone. I'm joining the Club Maserati weekend away drive from Sydney to the Hunter Valley this weekend so I'll be able to report any change with some distance under the belt.
I can also recommend to those in warmer climates to follow Phil's suggestion and use 10w60 oil, not the 5w40 in the manual for colder climates. Using Selenia Racing 10w60 the engine is so much quieter overall.

Finally got round to replacing my NR valve.

Rattle now gone.

Thanks a lot Paul and forum.

I too had a rattle at start up, particularly if the car hasn't been started for a few days.
Likewise, I did an oil change and replaced this N/R valve with a new one and then left the car for a week.

On Start up-Rattle gone!- Seems to be a fix!
Been started daily and no rattles since, so I can confirm well worth changing if you have this issue.

great info - I've just called a few dealers / eurospares and none in stock (you all beat me) one of the dealers is going to contact HQ to see when the parts maybe back in stock - will update all once I get a response

if anyone else is interested let me know qty and I will put in the request - unless anyone has a new value / washes going at cost ?

I would say it is, you get that with eurospares , always worth putting the part no into their search as there are several instances of the parts being the same across the marques, but the feza part is usually cheaper, another example of rip off maserati.

Thread revival!
Can anyone confirm that the Ferrari part - think end of £10 cheaper and crucially in stock - is the same part please?
The same part number from that site fits our cars, F430 and Enzo so might as well get the 12 cylinder part :D
Also seems to fit my 2006 QP so will order one as well. No end of noises from my 100k engine, but the LH bank does have loudest at start up.

Mine has started rattling on cold start for a few seconds, so I've just ordered the Ferarri non-return valve and washer.
