Undeclared modifications

I know this isn't the Barry boys forum but I know a lot of you have classics or other cars

My car got hit , one of the options is a cash settlement in lieu of repair so I thought I'd see what they offer as it's a cat C anyway and not that bad , a new bumper skin would cure most of it as the damage underneath is minimal

Anyway they asked for pictures of the damage via an app with specific pictures they wanted , amongst these was pictures of every angle of the car with the specific comment include the wheels

This reads to me like they're checking everything even though it's a non fault claim

So if you have a classic that's not standard make sure you've declared everything

A previous insurer told me they are interested in two kinds of modifications:
- performance enhancements
--- which could affect the premium for 'risk' reasons
--- and which if undeclared could invalidate a claim

- cosmetic or 'amenity' enhancements
--- which could affect the premium for 'insurable value' reasons
--- and which they simply would not pay to replace or fix in a claim if undeclared

This isn't your insurer, it's the third party's insurer.

And yes, they are.

I recently insured the Wee modified Abarth. I reeled off a list of mods, performance, wheels, body etc. They never batted an eyelid, just hope they read it.

Performance and cosmetic

Doesn't that cover every modification you can possibly make

some insurers love mods of any sort as it's a good excuse to screw you over on the quote, I bought a second hand bmw mini one for my daughter shortly after passing her test about 5 years ago, it already had a genuine jcw (john cooper works) body kit fitted, no mechanical mods in any way and the quote was actually far more than if i'd have bought a faster and more expensive copper s model, work that one out

Changed the 15" pressed steel wheels on my Barchetta for 17" alloys (195 tyres to 205/35/R17) an extra £10. Don't see the point as they are not going to make me drive faster or more unsafe! Just a money spinner in most cases but piece of mind if ever I was in an accident!...........................Oh Sh!t...............My 'H' pipe!!!!

When I was 20 I looked at an 1.8 astra coupe with a bertone factory kit. They wouldnt insure me.
What the did insure me on was a 2.6 v6 vectra sri which handled like a boat, had headlights like candles and breaks like feathers.

Insurance is a strange world.

Changing the stereo would have to be declared or it'd mean the Barry boys could add £5k stereos for their choons without Increasing the premium

Many policies include stereo cover "of up to £x amount"... I think my current premium is £500 or £1000 but I only spent about £400 on all of it and DIY installation

what about furry dice and go faster stripes
You may joke, I remember a case a few years ago about a devout christian woman who had loads of stickers on her car of the 'Jesus saves' sort of thing, she was involved in an accident and the insurers refused to pay because she had modified the look of her car with the stickers, think it might even have been mentioned in thread on here, so be warned!

Insuring a modified car can reduce premiums - certainly did not my son and his Golf GTI - once it went on air - upgraded exhaust and mapped his premium went down - go figure!
