Valve rattle on cold startup

I've had a problem for a few weeks where the valves rattle on my 2007 QP when I start it from cold. I searched around the forums and was worried it might be the variators needing to be changed and cost me £££££££££.

I then found a thread on the 4200 following some great advice from Voicey (as always) and it turns out the dry sump engines have an oil non return valve on the left hand cylinder head. There are two parts required 180267 the valve and 10261060 crush washer. Got the parts from Eurospares, unfortunately the maserti parts were not in stock but the ferrari ones were, (same part numbers) which turned out to be 25% cheaper total cost £32.

Changing them however is not an easy task, well for me as a DIY it wasn't, had to remove the wipers, wiper motor and scuttle panel plus back injector cable. Could then manage to get to the bolt with a swivel head spanner. I eventually got the valve out and replaced it and now I have no rattle on startup :)

Took me about 2 and a bit hours, i'm sure a lot quicker for the experienced technicians but really pleased it's now done and no more rattle. If anybody else has this issue with a dry sump QP worth considering doing it as it's a cheap fix for once !

I get that too I think, though usually after a few days of days of car not being started - might JFDI...

Had this on an old GranSport a good few years ago. MR told me to change the oil and what did you know, it went.

Is this the same as the pressure relief valve, or is that something else entirely?

Not pressure relief but a non return valve, so keeps the oil at the top end ready to supply at next start up

How old was the oil? as with the recommended annual change it should be fine or did you change grade?

Nope always use Shell Ultra. Changed it and it went. Maybe it was the flush and fresh oil that freed the gunk?

Oil was less than a year old and 5k miles

I change the oil every year, it didn't do it every day but it was getting more frequent, hoping iv'e caught it before any damage was done. Rattle still gone so all good so far. Strange how there is only one of them on the left side of the engine, I guess the oil must be fed different to the right side somehow.

Whenever anyone asks "why"- we hear NROV...but that is the fix!
Im not sure it does any damage, there are too many reports of it's being of no consequence but I find it rather hard to believe.
Something metallic is slapping about in there until pressure is built; usually very quickly. Mine does it seemingly randomly...cold, hot...minutes after it was just switched off. Whenever !
Is it valves, or the internals of the NROV itself..? If it's valves Id have to say oil starvation and slapping around anywhere in the train has got to be bad for business...!

On Triumph Stags this is the area that normally suffers from any noise at start up due to it being the last place to receive oil pressure, good idea to have a one-way valve to retain some oil in this area, nice new oil will help with pressure I'm guessing as well.

If it’s the NROV itself, you’d have to assume it’s no longer doing as it was intended....
An oil change cure further complicates my understanding of what exactly is rattling... if it’s the NROV, I’d say change it. If it needs pressure to close it ( stop it rattling) then oil is draining down when it isn’t sealed...ie- engine off

My oil is <1500 miles & 5 months old...! Oil pressure is healthy....

It’s an easy get...why wouldn’t you?
Besides, Such a great engine should never sound like that, however briefly ! :p

What type of NRV is it?
There are several types available eg a flapper type where the flap opens to allow oil forward and closes if the flow of oil reverses. Flappers can leak by not sealing properly on closure due to wear or debris etc.
Another type is a (stainless steel) ball that performs as above. There are other types but these are the most common I think

Heard a Gransport do this at the weekend, only for a second or so after startup, didn't say anything in fear of upsetting the owner! .

Does this need to be diagnosed at a specialist to determine what exactly is wrong? I ask because my QPV 2010 GTS makes a very slight rattle for 2 seconds from cold start up. No engine lights or error codes but just wondering what the best course of action is to prevent a large bill?!

Do the fix, for 20 quid or so plus and hour or two at a decent local garage or indy, all done for well under a ton.

Kudos to the OP for this one if it works (if it doesn't, it's a stoning even if he didn't say Jehovah...)
