Hello, I’m after a granturismo 4.2. No more than 70k miles. Max budget 18k.
Please message me if you have anything for sale. Thanks!

Welcome.

Are you budgeting for repairs yourself or anticipate it to be in spot on at the price you mention?

Not an unreasonable request, I bought mine for £18k 18 months ago - I did however budget to chuck another few thousand at it - which I have! Also it had 80k miles on it but I think mileage keeps those Italian gremlins away, apart from the rust of course

I was going to say the same. There are 6 for sale across the classifieds for under 20k and two with under 70k on the clock and this is the starting price and I am sure these could be bought cheaper as the 4.2 is not a big seller these days. I’m not sure a 4.2 is worth much more than 20k these days with the 4.7 starting around 25k looking at what’s is for sale. You may need to get work done at the bottom end of the market but it isn’t impossible I’m sure to get a good one if you get it inspected before you buy. I know a few weeks back there was a lovely red one for sale at 19k and that sold for £17500 with 67k in the clock and a friend knows the owner and the only issue picked up at inspection was rear pads. Good luck with your search.

Well Chris's old one was a Good buy not that long ago.
Just need to know what you're going into and get a inspection done and find out as much as possible about the car your looking at.

I have just done exactly this - 08 4.2 with 55k up for 20k. As above. Get an inspection done and do your research. Mine is currently having front suspension bushes and subframe protection done which is not insignificant and will need cam covers at some point...maybe variators too longer term.

I made sure I had a budget for works and accepted at the bottom of the market it would need some tlc.

Good luck!

As above, you do need to be very cautious at this entry point.

The GTs body is well protected for rust, but the subframes are not. This is causing cars to fail MOTs due to structural weakness at less than 10 years old. It can be treated if caught early enough, but if not you are looking at c£3k to fix.

Variators will be a potential issue at this age/type of engine, again c£2.5k... yes you can delay it, but at this age its a worry you don't need.

Due to the size and weight the car the front suspension takes a lot of stress, bushes and arms will probably need attention at anything from £500-1000 to put right.

Wheel bearings and the ABS sensor is a common fault at c£500 per wheel.

Cam gaskets, c£400 for the pair.

Of course you may be fortunate and find one with non of these issues, but treat all cars like they have, until you have evidence they do not, and budget accordingly.

£2k pa maintenance and repair war chest for anything else and you should be sorted.

They look stunning, and the early ones can be picked up for high teens... but please don't get bitten and turn into the guy in the pub who slates the brand due to buying a basket case... Best of luck.

Are there any GT's advertised for sale at or below £18k, with less than 70k miles, that are not Cat C/D, and do not need several £k of works? Surely an £18k car that needs say, £2k of work, is no longer an £18k car? I just think the OP is going to struggle to find a sorted GT, with less than 70k on the clock, for a total sum of £18k all-in. But I suppose it might not be impossible.

I'm about to advertise my car. (pictured)
£20k (firm) Firm means non negotiable.
86,000, FSH, I'm the 4th owner and I know the other three.
The car was NEVER abused.
All have over serviced the car, done preventative maintenance and
everything it's needed, it's got.
Front end and roof repainted to remove road rash.
Car is immaculate inside and out and drives with no rattles etc.
like a car with half the mileage.
Completely standard car.
Is on nearly new Continental Sport Contacts.
Has a Parrot professionally fitted.
Will be supplied with a new MoT.
Has been stored in a temperature controlled warehouse for the last two years.
Is in Northern Ireland but I'd drive it over for cost.
The next owner will have no servicing costs for a year or two,
depending on when he decides to change the oil etc
(several litres of which will also be included)
It kills me to advertise the car as it's been trouble free and a joy to own.
However, I plan to spend the next few years sailing the oceans,
so very reluctantly, she ought to go to a new home.
She may not be a 4.7, but I never cared. Because she put a grin on my face
every time I saw her and my heart lept, every time my right foot headed towards
the floor.
Let me know if you're interested and I'll get in touch.

Thanks for letting me know. Unfortunately outside budget but thanks again.

Getting impatient looks like most of people are selling to dealers and off course they have to top up to make their money…I’ll keep looking

I started off with a 4.2GT as well... I swapped it for the 4.7MCS after 6 weeks which I then had for 18 months. The 4.2 is a very disappointing car.

As mentioned above, save up for the 4.7.

I'm going to disagree with Dan as if you want a Good GT with a Great auto box for long distance trips it ticks the boxes for effortless stylish journeys still making a noise.
If you want to drive full on then yes you need a 4.7 F1 box but your passengers probably won't enjoy the journey as much but you will.
We all no sticking them in Auto is a no no.
You just need to choose what's best for you.

I bought the one i could afford, which was a 4.2 auto. I kinda made it into an 4.7 (brakes, exhaust and some interior stuff). Only downside is the early auto box. It was only recent I learned that later models have upgraded transmission software on the auto. Supposedly it makes it a bit better.

Didnt save for the 4.7 because i didn't believe the 4.7 was that much more of a car. Maybe i should have taken it for a test drive and would have decided otherwise. So that's kinda the advice, go for a testdrive in both and then decide how they compare. Although i really wanted to buy a new toy and didnt fancy saving for another 2 years. In the end i spend enough money over the last 3 years to easily get into a 4.7. But i now have 3 years of ownership and smiles. Which i do not regret.

The budget isn't yet stretching even to a 4.2, so the chat about a 4.7 is somewhat academic. Anyway, the 4.2 is a nice car in many ways, and equally as beautiful, stylish and comfortable as the 4.7, just not quite as quick nor loud.

Not supposedly - it is much improved.

Agree 100%

Given the genuine upward trajectory of used car prices, the budget seems unlikely to get you into a non CAT x car. There may of course be some bargains out there so good luck with the search
