What can you vary on a GS?

The Trofeo cars also ran lower profile rubber 245/35/18 fronts and 295/30/18 rears

Maserati have a learning system built in to the ECU, which adapts eventually to the driving style of it's regular driver, it will need a few journeys to get to your peak performance.
I hope this helps..??

Had no idea this was happening, thanks for sharing Rob.

To be fair, you're not comparing like with like there Mike. The Trofeo runs much stiffer suspension and ARB, so the tyres need to perform a very different task.

Okay points taken!
I do still think that 18" are more suited to our roads though, or shall I say the slighter higher profile.
Even on track, I don't think for one minute the 18's are 'wobbley"

thanks guys for all your helpful comments

I really don't believe the exhaust was right. It made no real sounds at all. Not what I was expecting.

I suspect either the valves weren't working? (is this feasible)

or

it had a standard 4200 back box set up retro fitted for some reason (eg an aftermarket system replaced with a cheaper non GS system??)

If the car has been sitting about for a while I wonder if its valves need oiling!!! :)

The Trofeo cars run the same profile as the GS albeit on different tyre sizes..!!

TrM5, an easy way to tell what is on the back and if the valves are working, is drive it in normal at around 3K rpm then hit the sport button, you should hear a different noise..?? The valves could be stuck, or the electrics are not triggering them..!!

I hit the sport button about 6 times on the test drive, and gave it serious beans about 5 times! but at no point did it give any different sounds or indeed any sound of note!!! I was very disappointed!! :-(

As they're valved back boxes you won't necessarily hear much of a difference in the car. Just a change in the note of the exhaust hum. Stand at the back of the car whilst stationary and have someone press the button and you should then hear a noticeable change to the exhaust note. On a standard GS exhaust setup the benefit goes largely to the onlooker rather than the driver.

I stood on the gas when stationary standing outside the car but didn't have the sport button pressed! (Doh!)

But inside the car I really didn't get any sense of it when driving.

I expected to get at least something.....

If you can get down to Silverstone on Saturday I can give you a demo of what modified GS boxes can sound like. It's a cheap and cheerful mod but lets it breath a lot better.

Thanks I'd love to be there, but I'm always very busy with work, and family (and currently Christmas!) and I'm a fair stretch from Silverstone.

Its one of the difficulties of being into Maseratis - they are rare, and there isn't much going on nearby in deepest darkest sussex where I live!
