Why Are My Nuts Sooo Tight.

Jacked the rear of the car up (54 Plate 4200CC) and proceeded to remove both road wheels, well I tried to.
I couldn't believe how tight the wheel bolts were.
Had to drop the car back onto the ground and use a combination of impact gun and long breaker bar. Finally, around an hour, beat them into submission but not after suffering a terminal failure with my Britool 17mm socket, an old trusted friend now departed to the socket set in the sky.
Sorry for the rant but I'm really piffed off as to why anyone would tighten them so much. I shall be using a torque wrench when re-fitting.

Had that with my sons first a (MGzs) in the end took it to the tw4ts that serviced it and replaced the brakes and told them to get them off abs torque then correctly.
Most recently on my daughters Fiat 500 I had the nuts off the wheel was stuck solid and corroded on - a right pain to free up, in the end O put the nut back on loosely and then drove in on and off the curb.

Erm! Following on from my last statement, 'I shall be using a torque wrench when re-fitting.' Can anyone advise what the torque setting should be?

Thanks, I'm impressed with your knowledge, I normally have to explain what it is and where it came from.
I've just updated my avitar, thought it might be a bit contentious sticking a Japanese banshee in amongst these Italian stallions. I'm awaiting the screams...;)

Yep; just pure laziness on the part of tyre fitters and p!ss poor service monkeys. But in all honesty how often have you seen a torque wrench at a tyre shop? Couldn't say I've ever seen one. Yes at indy service centres though.

My local tyre shop used one last month when they did my tyres. I was quite impressed!

Our local F1 have always used them, but fully prepared to believe they are in the minority.

a torque wrench often appears when mechanic falls under the shadow of looming Maserati owner "just being nosey".

Are we sure that applying any kind of grease to wheel bolts is the approved method?

I was always told copper grease on wheel face, rears of brake pads, but never on wheel studs or nuts. Everyone to their own.

Whenever I re-fit a road wheel and reach for the torque wrench this quote wafts across my brain,
"Brace yourself Martha, I'm coming in dry"
Anyone know the source?
