Would you?

So, I have been hankering after another QP5 duo select for a year or so - I have such fond memories of my first 2006 QP5 back in 2009, and I am convinced it was the best QP I have ever driven armed with the experience at the time of back to backing it with a ZF. It just seemed to go down the road better.

Finally, a 2005 QP has appeared that I absolutely love the specification of, particularly colour wise. It has had one owner and done 15000 kms from new, but needs a light restoration due to a lack of care by the previous owner - mainly door dings, small parking scuffs, kerbed wheels, sticky plastics and some dry and cracked dashboard top leather. However, it appears to have potentially only had 3 services in 16 years, the most recent in 2019 by the Maserati main dealer in Lisbon, since which it has only done about 2k kms. It even has its original front tyres!

If you were similarly in the market for a Duoselect QP, subject to nothing significant turning up on the mechanical/structural inspection, and a realistic offer being accepted by the owner, would you? Or would the shockingly poor service history totally put you off. I am convinced a light restoration could turn it into a long term keeper and concours standard car, as the rest is cosmetically very good.

Interested to hear views on this.

Down to price really and what kind of service the Dealer did back in 2019.
Was it just a oil service or were other things done too.
Interested to see how you get on as they are strong money here in France.

the vacant service history would score 2/10 on the worry meter for me. The running gear is mechanically robust (when used as intended)
Only 1500kms is 7/10 worry for me when added to the lack of history.
The 9/10 worry is subframe, even in sunny Lisbon. Portugal has a bit of coastline, albeit one side only.

Worth a punt if you buy it for the price of parts.

Phil, can you find QP5 EU LHD headlights if I decide to keep mine and reg in BE or LUX?

Depends whether it has been parked right next to the Atlantic for the last 15 years. Seriously, I suspect you have very high standards so why not source the best one you can find in the EU and have it sent over?

If the car is to be a long term keeper the early missed history and issues should be your concern only. But if you want it for a year or so I suspect it will be a hard sell to a new owner as people will perceive its trouble.

As a long term keeper - yes (subject to a thorough going over and price).

If not, it would need to be cheap ... or you would need to accept tat you will need to sell cheap to move it on.

It had a pretty major looking service in 2019 at the main dealer which still has a good reputation with these older cars.

I understand the owner has a large collection of Ferraris etc and used the QP regularly but for very limited miles during his ownership. It was garaged throughout his ownership when not in use, hence the quality of the non-damaged paintwork. But was parked on streets often in Lisbon when used, hence the parking dings, wheel rash etc.

All of this is subject to a thorough inspection at the Ferrari/Maserati specialist in Lisbon that will look at mechanical and structural condition, including suspension and subframes. And the car will come with a 12 month mechanical warranty.

Still seriously thinking about this.

Well, if it’s still priced right and
1subject to the inspection throwing up no huge nasties and
2budgeting for the cost of all remedial work you wanna do (against the cost of future others in better nick etc)
3if it’s a long term keeper for you (service history would probably put off future buyers)

It seems like a suitable car for u.

I may live to regret this, but the deal is done at a reasonable reduction on the asking price, but subject to the specialist mechanical and structural inspection. I have spent the last two days looking at just about ever Duoselect QP for sale throughout Europe, and there just isn’t one that comes anywhere close to this one on colour combination in terms of what I want. I definitely want blue and preferably a tan interior. This one’s tan interior has the added benefits of contrast stitching and black piping. It blew me away in the photos and also in the flesh. With such low miles, the leather looks like it has never been sat on, retaining that lovely grained matt finish.

Perhaps I will end up having to spend on it underneath, but to get the colours I wanted and a unique interior like this, I concluded that I was prepared to do so. It won’t be to every bodies taste, but here’s a few tasters.

I’m in. My GranTurismo is Oceano with tan so whoever ordered this from the factory is a god.
