Well, I bought my 3200GT at the end of 2010 for £14,000. It's probably worth a lot more now (still not done 50K). I've spent about £4,000 keeping it ticking along and fully serviced etc., including Tubi boxes. Things are now about to take a more expensive turn as it has reached the stage where some more specialist attention is required. However, I don't think it's been as bad as I might have expected and much more fun than even I had anticipated. Bottom line: I would never sell it. If i couldn't afford to run it, I'd just look at it.
Yes, Ferrari are utterly useless. But we do have that large pool of genuine and knowledgable Indepedents dotted around the country that are an invaluable asset. As long we stick around, so will they.
We also have the forum. People who appear to know everything if you're prepared to do your research and will often move heaven and earth to help. It's the wrong Marque for a hassle free life - but the right Marque for a life worth living. (And skinned knuckles.)
Hats off to you all.
Steve.

This thread is excellent, a very good look at what the future can and may hold for us all. This debate could go on and on but the thing about this forum is that there is no animosity just reasoned, well structured debate :D

I think Steve (Mott) has it right, if something goes wrong and it can't be fixed then these cars are so beautiful they can simply be looked at and admired like a static piece of art. Maybe the blessing to these cars is that the dogs will be scrapped thus meaning more parts for the excellent cherished examples.

****! it! I'm going to stick a Chevy V8 in mine. ;)

remember a few years back you would see Ghiblis and Espadas with the odd Chevy V8 thrown in, bet they don't have them in now.

I just want to know how the heck you're going to get the throttle body on a 3200 to work reliably when they don't on the original lump.

Guys ,
The only reason I said they will not be around in ten years is due to spare parts not been available.
For example you can no longer get Thrust washers for Cranshaft , Chranshaft , bearings , cylinder heads , camshafts , oil pressure switches this is just a small list of mechanical parts , and most of the electrical parts are no longer available.
I would love for the 3200 to be around in 20 years not just 10 , but some times and only because we have problems every day with this issues we need to be realistic over this .

The difference in the older car nad biturbo the technology and electrics are very simple so you could resolve problems .

I hope I am wrong and we still have 3200 for a long time , but if you where in my shop for a week and you experience the difficulties we have getting parts for them maybe you will understand why I said they will not be around .

We have a car in at the moment which I would say most probably is the best 3200 in the uk , my customer called me a couple of weeks ago and he told me that on his way in to me from Derby for an MOT he had a cloud of blue smoke so I asked him to tow the car in , head gaskets had failed but once and we removed the heads we where shocked how badly the heads where coroted and we had to find used heads for the car because New are no longer available .
Marios

I hope I haven't upset anybody because I LOVE Maseratis and I would do anything to keep cars on the road .

So I hope I am wrong and Maserati start a heritage department to reproduce some of this parts , we do keep asking them for this but have no idea if they take any notice from anybody .

The thrust washer problem has been sorted with some kind of easy to get aftermarket oversize items, hence you can now save worn end float crankshafts..

Its not just 3200's that'll suffer either, 4200's and GS's are going the same way!

Its just an old car thing, there lots of ways around the problems...picking the phone up and trying to order parts that don't exist isn't the end of the world..

The 42/GS does have the advantage of much longer and greater production volumes, also shared components with the QP/GT and Ferrari with the engine/drive train especially, the weak point of the 3200 for spares.

That's exactly why the price of good 3200's are going up, there rare and the last in the line of classic Maser bi turbo's!

The information I have been given on the 3200, but unsubstantiated, is that the heads are becoming unstable. Slowly breaking down and clogging the systems both oil and coolant.

Is this fact or fiction?

With correct antifreeze/corrosion inhibitors, I find that surprising, unless they are a real poor grade of aluminium alloy.

It does seem a little surprising, given that the cam belt interval is three years and the coolant has to be drained in order to change it. I'd be surprised if anyone reused the old coolant for how little it costs to replace with new. I always use distilled water to mix mine up too, which may help prevent corrosion a little long term.

This is what happens to the heads , sometimes they can be welted and then Skim , otherwise replacing heads with New or used which becomes a very expensive job .

It's been on for a while Peter, think someone started a thread on it....

Yep, GS or GTS??
Prices too close and muddled, but I guess consumables more affordable on GS, brakes etc...
Minefield out there.

As well as the two GS Richard has for sale, this has popped up on Piston Heqds...makes Richards cars look like a bargain.

Same spec as mine and close to Matts' - Get one while you can (under £40k)

It does look nice, although personally I don't care for the "chicken mesh" grille. Although I realise it was on the facelift 4200. It would look better if it matched the mesh on the rear.
