edited with videos and engine number is m139S 166478

Exclamation 16k miles, valve noise, now what?
Ok so up until 15.8k or so the engine was SILENT, not a creak, stutter noise, groan etc etc (not a single squeak inside the car either!) and thats with approx 1k miles on a fresh oem filter and 0-40 mobil 1 which i use in almost ever single one of my past 20+ "race" engine cars/bikes.

It started to make a very, VERY slight tick (most people wouldn't notice but I'm a racer so heightened awareness) around 15.8k as I noted on here and was recommended the tutella or similar additive which apparantly is just another ZDDP mix which i used in all the race cars/bikes especially the turbo stuff. MADE ZERO DIFFERENCE.

Here we are now at 16.5k and its making valve noise all the way from 2k up and you can hear each and every valve open/close at 7k, not ideal. granted I know its NOT going to explode here, I'm an extremely sensitive pilot so I'm making it seem worse than it is but all of a sudden it went from "ok, you can pass this off as they all do it" to "ok, this thing has some real valve noise). I changed the oil earlier today and swapped the 0-40 to 15-50 and it made ZERO difference. Ive put about 100miles on it of all types of engine load and rpm to try and get it to relearn the valves or voodoo magic or something... no such luck. when crusinging around at 2500-4500rpm in town it sounds like (look at this ******* in his fancy POS that making a ton of valve noise haha) so not just wide open throttle pulls or heavy load its always present.

Intensely distraught right now. Everyone says this car means a lot to them but THIS one is on a whole other level for me, its my 2nd one and I made REAL sacrifices to make it happen, I absolutely cannot take another emotional/spiritual blow of having it running any less than 99%.

Please help! (its not the oil)

*also last saturday it was just making normal slightly elevated valve tick only at 1500-2500ish then i parked it for 2 days, battery died and now all of a sudden I'm making this post. NO OTHER VARIABLES

**so I watched some YouTube variator noise demonstrations and it is deffinately it that at all it's just normal valve noise that turns into a buzz due to the speed of it at high rpm. Sound so like my LS7 Z06 did w their common valve ticking.

Ideas? No dealership...

**SOUND CLIPS OF PROBLEM. Too loud to record the super fast buzz when driving but its like that but louder and faster at 7krpm
If your computer audio isn't world class it comes thru youtube on my iPhone perfectly!

I hate to tell you this, but it might still be the variators. My engine didn't sound anything like the ones on YouTube. This is why I asked for your engine number.

There's a few other things it might be. Sticky / noisy injector and / or failing coil pack making a sparking noise.

It's just a constant buzz not clack clack clack like the variator videos. Basically like you tossed lose coins on the engine between the heads and drove around.

I can't find where it tells you to check the engine number in the link you sent me?

Variators is the first point of call so yes supply us with your engine number which although shouldn't affect 11 cars could do.

First vid sounds alarming but the second at idle from all perspectives doesn't not sound any different from mine.

agreed at idle there is not much noise if any. it really sounds like a bucket of bolts like if you downshifted to 2nd from 3rd at 40mph as your coming to a redlight and there is engine braking slowing you down at like 4k down to 2krpm really really bad. or crusing around with very light load ex 3-10% throttle just barely accelerating or maintaining speed at the 2k+

Shouldn't be the variators as that should only be engine numbers up to 148697

Other than that I suspect we're stumped :(

just drove it 1300 miles to my place in Ft Lauderdale.

Happy to report noises are gone. I suspect it was something with the variations or VVT or something that is adjusting the valves based on the outside air or intake temperature. It only made noise when it was colder than 60* outside. 78* this morning absolutely no noise.

Lovely.

Car however only got 23.1mpg at 71mph average during the trip w 38/39psi hot. Was running 26-28 on my first GTS and this one did that when I picked it up originally as well.

Car is beyond filthy, need to find a good wash today

I know its a bit 'old school' but a small investment in a mechanics stethoscope (UK from Amazon Silverline 154006 Mechanics Stethoscope 320 mm ) at around £6.50.
This will allow you to very accurately pinpoint any mechanical noise - you would think that with all the bits whirring around you wouldn't be able to tell what was what - but its not that hard. You can certainly differentiate bearing noises, rumbles, ticks, end float, valve bounce, detonation, knock, chatter, Variator assemblies, water pump and alternators picking up etc. if you want to get fancy you can I believe even get electronic units that record or send via Bluetooth!
Oils and greases - and I'm sure someone has said it all before but - doesn't matter how expert we think we are we do not have access to the exact details of why engines were developed with particular oils - but there are subtle differences so my recommendation now is ALWAYS use the manufacturers specified and recommended lubes .
