Hi folks,

My car gathered some rather unexpected attention at the weekend. This chap seemed particularly intrigued so I beckoned him over. Turns out he's had a 228 from brand new bought on a whim as bankrupt stock from the folding dealer in 1986. He was still a teenager (!!!) so couldn't ever get insured to drive the thing for quite a few years hence it's probably used only 4 tanks of fuel and never really started driving it since... so it has only 800 miles on the clock.

He says the interior is absolutely mint, and the bodywork matches apart from one small spot, but of course the engine has hardly been run for over 30 years and frankly would need an overhaul before even firing it up.

What do you guys would think need attending to in order to have it back in running order? What might it be worth right now, and what about with all the neccessary work done?

I can't give more away about the car, but the owner has asked me to do some canvassing as he really doesn't know values right now.

Cheers all!
S

I bet you would Phil.
Some clown advertising a MK1 Fiesta XR2 for 25K on Classic and Sportscar.
Find another 228 with 800 miles.
Auction the best route.

It'll cost more to restore than its actual worth, and money-no-object collectors of this era of Maserati's are, frankly, non-existent. But for best advice consult Andy Heywood of McGrath Maserati as he is a bi-turbo fan and his garage is one of the few that can properly restore them.

One more point. Is it blue?

A bag in each and we we can have a forum restoration project.

Failing that, I'll give him 2.1k ;)
