It never ceases to amaze me how brutally these engines are removed, the wiring loom and even the hoses severed to the quick, where is the benefit to the breaker in stripping the coil packs off this for example and likewise cutting the injectors back like that?

There is a 4200 engine up for £1,800 as well on fleabay and the loom looks like a fire axe has severed it, the daft bit is that there are sockets for the whole engine loom on these!

Yep, pure idiocy.
Especialy considering that the wiring harness is an item that can be sold. And an expensive one for that matter!
This one has one extra annoiance.
The spark plug wells are not covered so expect the engine to be contamined with debris

It seems to be common practice. I bought a spare Alfa V6. It's the same hoses cut through for the sake of undoing a clip, same with loom, hacked right through. Plus point it does stop crud getting into wiring sockets, and hose stubs being damaged in transit.

If I knew the turbos had no play and the crankshaft had no excessive end float I would probably buy it for spares.
Buying it via eBay seems a very big risk!

I have a spare engine for the Alfa; I'm hoping it will be like the painting in the attic! Seems to be working so far...

Nope; lost me with that one Chris!

Dorian Gray is a wealthy gentleman who has gained immortality by having his soul trapped within a painting. He is well known for his extravagance and debauchery.

I thought that was what you were referring to?

I may well have been then, short of knowledge as I am, I was intimating that keeping a working engine in the garage may be influencing the longevity of the existing one... Like putting your portrait in the attic so it ages not you... Ahhhhh...!!!

As long as it's not 50 shades of Newton ;)

I've probably got 50 shades of grey going on with what is left on top!

I was not familiar with that logic. Better buy the engine just in case :)

Well I thought there was a terminal problem with the engine as the big end went within two weeks of resurrecting it from a three year slumber, I changed the shells and got away with it but there was another knocking noise. I found a 32,000 mile 2.0l twin spark engine locally for £200 which was a bit of a bargain. Turned out to be an issue with the balancer belt/pulley so the old one lives on...

Exactly so :) And should you ever gaze upon the engine in the attic, the working engine will miraculously cease to work ;)
