The F40 engine was a development of the Dino V6 designed by Vittorio Jano and Dino Ferrari.

The Maserati V8 was a development of the Bi-turbo V6 of the early 80s.

So I suspect the only things they have in common is the configuration, but we will see.

As Zep said both were based on engines that can trace their lineage back to the sixties. There was no relationship between the two companies until after the F40 and 3200 were on sale.

I reckon correct but knowing Ferrari/Maserati relationships it wouldn't surprise me if they used the same crank/block and everything else!!!

As @Zep said, Dino V8s and Biturbo V8s have nothing in common.

One interesting thing we should keep in mind is that Biturbo V8s are VERY compact. Their bore pitch is only about 90 mm, whereas that of Dino V8s is 94 mm and that of Ferrari F136 (4200) is 104 mm.

Ah, there you go. I couldn’t find the bore pitch but that rules out any chance of the block or crank being common.

Regarding the crankshaft, all the Dino V8s except for that of Thema 8.32 have flat-plane crankshaft, and all the Biturbo V8s except for that of Shamal have cross-plane crankshaft.

So the Shamal has a flat plane crankshaft, never knew that. Always thought it was the same as the 3200 that followed. Did it ever suffer from end float problems like the 3200?

I don't know about Shamal's end float. In my opinion, the cause of the end float problem is the high pressure of the clutch. 3200 has more max torque (50 kgm) than Shamal (44.5 kgm) or Quattroporte (46 kgm), so its clutch pressure is higher.

By the way, I have heard that the max torque of Shamal and Quattroporte was restricted because their differential could not cope with it.
