Morning all -

Just a quicky; as noted recently, I have just bought a 3200Gt. Will be completing an interim service over the next weekend or 2, but just wanted to pick your brains about the oil. Do you all only use the Selenia 10w60 as recommended in the handbook? I called JCT 600 Leeds (Maserati dealer) and they suggested they would use Shell 10w60, but wanted to hear the opinions of those that really care about their cars prior to buying the necessaries. Service Kit wise, will be utilising Eurospares for the full kit - any one any other suggestions or does this sound like the right way to go?

So we're in total agreement, Selenia it is then!!! Cheers for confirming what I had been thinking; also - isn't it great that Maserati Leeds (JCT) DONT use this on our precious cars when taking them in to service?? Good to know..... SELENIA it is!!

At the risk of being "virtually" stoned as a heretic and Barts's rear end notwithstanding, I use Shell Racing 10W60 which is a fully synthetic oil and meets all the manufacturers specifications. The manual does recommend Selenia and as you can see, there are those who follow that advice with zeal. ;-)

To be fair Neil, Shell oils are the suppliers to Ferrari and the correct oil for the 4200/QP/GS so I would not have issue with that.

Still, if you can get hold of it, I would stick with the oil that the engine was designed around, its the turbos, they shred it.

Cheers gents; next question - anyone got any recommendations on where to get the Selenia?? Searched high and low and can only find it via Alfa dealers- presume this would be the same oil so Alfa dealer should be fine?

You can get Selenia oil and tutela fluids from Alfa/fiat dealers my local (Arnold Clark) have a 10% off discount card which could come in handy

Conaero - I called the JCT600 yesterday to enquire and they advised they now use Shell Racing 10w60 rather then the Selenia, hence the original post - wasnt overly impressed to be honest as they guy I spoke to didnt even seem familiar with Selenia!? Will use the links and get something ordered later this week - appreciate all your help Think I'm gonna call JCT back and see if I can speak to someone that has actually serviced a 3200Gt before, rather than the tea boy I mustve been chatting with...

You can get Selenia on e-bay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140425828123&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:1123 but note also that i have used the Shell edge oil before and agree it meets the spec, and had no problems with it. However and this will sound mad, but i think the car runs better on the Selenia or was just that feeling of doing it right that made me feel better? you will also find an unreasonable number of threads on this subject with a little searching.

I emailed Opie Oils as they dont advertise the Selenia Racing 10w60 fully synthetic on their site, this is their response >>

What was put in your handbook is only there doe to money, Selenia pay Maserati, Alfa and Fiat to recommend their oils. It is not a bad oil, but there are better ones around.

The Gulf and Millers are probably the best oils, closely followed by the Castrol Edge. The Shell and Mobil are also good oils, just not quite as good as the others.


Any thoughts?

Thanks for your comments Davy; think with it being the first full service since I bought her I will be using Selenia, for piece of mind if nothing else as you suggest! Just interesting to hear the thoughts of others with some real hands on experience as opposed to the dealers/oil companies beliefs!

This has been raised before, that the engine was designed to take into account the oils available at that time.......Selenia was best suited to the 3200 engine.....NOT the newer/better/up-dated oil.....

You can get Selenia 10-60 at Shop4parts, just google thier web site, seach under and alfa 156 0r GTV / engine lubricants and you will find it. They sell at a discount and will post it to you.

PS My 3200 uses Selenia but I originally used Castol Edge and I had no problems with it and I do tend to agree with opie oils view. Selenia 10-60 is made to a specification and a lot of other manufacturers meet and probably exceed the specification, it just safe for workshops to stick with what the manuafacturers recommend.

Yes, I have written extensively on Selenia for 3200s. This is not a question of what may or may not be suitable as there are several equivalents including AGIP Racing 10w60, but rather what is recommended by the factory and the fact that the 3200 engine was designed and developed using this oil. Put simply, other oils MAY be suitable but with Selenia Racing 10W60 there is NO doubt. Although I use Opie Oils for my BMW and Ducati bike lubes, I would take their comments above with rather a large pinch of salt - words of 2 syllables in the plural comes to mind

One final word of advice particularly if sourcing from Alfa dealers: There are actually 2 Selenia 10W60 oils but only one of them is suitable for 3200s and that is designated "Selenia Racing 10W60"
