4200 Cat Issue

My 2003 4200 has a badly failed left hand front Cat (Part number 194715). Does anyone know of a reasonable replacement available, or a way of getting around the problem? Looked at the Larini option, but they are very expensive, and a used part from Eurospares is eye wateringly expensive!

Have you got euro spec manifolds (catless) or us spec (with cats in header)

If you have us spec manifolds which cat has failed? The one in the manifold or the one in the adjoining pipe?

Charlie at prospeed in Cardiff knows his way around these cars and should be able to help out if your near him.

Cheapest way would probably be to have an exhaust fabricator cut out original cats and replace with 200 cell modern ones. They start at around £70 each and go upwards from there.

Rough estimate probably around £300 to £350 to have the front cats on both sides replaced with 200 cell ones.

Im sure somebody will be along that has had it done soon to give you a better idea on fully fitted price.

Should sound a little throatier as well afterwards and breath a bit better.

Second hand replacement front cat will cost you around £400 and could fail again further down the line as they are ceramic cores.

Your other option would be to have the front cats removed on both sides as there are two further back.

I've got euro spec manifolds I believe. The cat which has failed is the front left hand side). I replaced the rear two cats with 200 cell cats a year ago, but the front pair look a little tricky as they are an odd shape. If they can also be replaced with 200 cell modern ones, that would be good.

PM Geoff capes. I think he had the front cats cut out and replaced on his 4200 when he had it.

Can't they just be gutted?

Yes they can. There is a forum member with the front cat absent presume cored on one side. It will make the car throatier as a result. It will still pass the emissions test without the front cats.

Job done then. It would be what I would do in the immediate to short term. In fact I did on my SL500.

I had my front cats cut open and gutted (US Spec headers). Will have to install some eBay O2 cheaters to the lambda sensors to fool the ECU into thinking the Cats are still there.

Cheap solution. Sounds better. No risk of cat material getting into engine if rumors are to be believed.

Hi Paul,

Just sent you a reply. This is the work Ashford Fast Road Conversions did for my 4200. They are excellent.
