4200 - Clutch or Pump?

Hi all

Been noticing lately that sometimes she won't go into gear quite as quickly as usual - its pretty random, but always in lower gears it seems. For instance, sitting in traffic coming out of neutral to 1st she just sits in neutral for a few seconds and then I hit the paddle again and either she eventually goes into first or kind of gets confused and goes up to 2nd gear?

Its weird, as a month ago it was a problem dropping down from 3rd to 2nd but otherwise as above - the 3rd to 2nd problem happened a few times then kind of went away all on its own?

The F1 pump relay was changed out a month or so back so that should be fine , but we havent touched the clutch or pump itself etc yet and I was just wondering which might seem more likely to be the cause of the problem, its very intermittent so getting my mechanic to witness it is proving troublesome as its just not that common an occurence, yet..

Also wondered if it could just be something to do with the paddles themselves? Do the switches or whatever they link to fail atall?

I do realise if its the clutch itself Im off to a specialist to do the work as they have to plug it in and program it or whatever (Think Giallo in kent is the closest to me), but just about anything else my guy can most likely deal with if we can diagnose it.

As an aside, has anyone any clues how to fix a floppy sun visor? Driving me mad trying to figure it out..

On the upside, having had some paint, the interior cleaned and touched up, the headlight covers resurfaced and various other bits doing shes starting to look a bit stunning for a high mileage girl :)

Im pouring far more into her than Ill ever see back but thats not the point really is it (!) Just a shame the crappy weathers starting to close in now as she'll be going into storage soon just as I get her mostly 'right' :(

Thanks for your time

Si

I would offer to come and help you and your mechanic diagnose the problem (I have a diagnostic tool) but I'm going away next week for a month.

However, you do need someone with a tool. Anything could be happening and you need to read the parameters in the TCU to give you a clue. Anything else is guesswork.

When are you back, voicey? I think I need my PIS set as we discussed. It can wait (it'll have to)

Cheers

I had a similar thing but it would not give me 1st at all and always went for 2nd after trying to push it in a few times. Mine was collapsed clutch spring fingers.

Get someone with one of those endoscope thingys to have a look.

Thanks for the replies, Ill ask him to look into the spring fingers and also gearbox actuater as possibilities.

Oddly, as it happens I have an endoscope anyway, for entirely unrelated reasons, so maybe its time to dig her out again.

Voicey, when your back maybe i could possibly hire you to pop down for a few hours to have a look at it with my mechanic mark? But the cars outside of London, in East Grinstead, west sussex.

The thing is its so intermittant at the moment Im hoping worst case she'll last till I put her in to storage in about a months time, and the car storage facility is owned by a mate who has a ramp and is where I get most my work done anyway. Marks got a massive winter 'to do' list on her while shes out of action anyway, as theres some front suspension issues we're holding back on for now until shes off the road as I need her to run about in until then and due to a couple of seized bolts Marks telling me when he cuts or heats them off we're 'All in' (Which I think is mechanic speak for off the road for quite a while! :) ).

Thanks
Si

Mine just had a failed actuator replaced, once again by Emblem but the symptoms were different.

Occasionally it would select neutral, mainly on upshifts and the odd selection of neutral when slowing down for a junction. The issue never really got any worse and given it had done 50K miles we were planning a clutch swap. Then as we were leaving Le Mans the gearbox would only select 1st & 2nd. When Emblem removed the actuator they found it was only moving in one plane so a new one was fitted, not a cheap job new part is over £2400 from Maserati but Eurospares did me one for £1850.

Sure thing. I'll make a note to check this thread on my return.
