Just looking for some advice on my manual gearbox on my 4200.
The change from 1 to 2 is very stiff and it's impossible to get a quick smooth change. It is almost as I need to hang around in neutral for a second before feeling it in to 2nd. It feels notchy as it goes in as well.
Do other manual cars have the same problem. I wouldn't say 2-3 or 3-4 was great but not too bad.

Cables need adjustment. ..the box was designed for the CC and the cables run to the rear transaxle

Do they stretch, go rusty or fray. Do they need replacement? I have to say the gear change has always been poor but having never driven another manual 4200 I have nothing to compare it against

How old is the oil in your gearbox? Maybe a change can help getting smoother shifts.

Phil, I've owned one and driven another 4 and they were all the same. As Safrane says, the cables can be adjusted but it makes little difference. When I bought my first manual 4200 from Lewis, it had new cables and linkage that day and was still notchy and didn't improve over time. 1st to 2nd is usually the awkward one, whilst the rest of the changes should be spot on.

I wanted a manual 4200 until I drove one. It was notchy and a pain in the a55 and I didn't like it. I then drove a CC and loved it, I still do, every time I drive it. I even changed my BM from a manual to a 'flappy paddle' auto.

On the advice of a local specialist- TWG Racing- I changed gearbox oil to Redline.
There was a distinct improvement in gear changes.
Not perfect but much nicer to drive.
Try it.
