Hi Steve, yes the current air box will be replaced / removed and a silicone hose replacement will 'straighten' the induction and wrap around the side of the radiator, moving the intake to a big K&N placed behind the grille on the near side. This will effectively move the intake up to a much safer height but I wouldn't drive it through anything that would come over the door sills!

Well that gives a better clearance than the tyre rim just. Have you any idea on cost of this conversion yet and are you still in trial stage.

Still developing it, I know where I'm going with it but need to get it finished. The next stage is to take my effort to the manufacture of performance parts and get them to make up a full kit based upon my model. A rolling road using the old air box grafted back on to demonstrate the gains and collect 20 + orders so a batch can be run in colours of peoples choices.

Yes, it will pretty much fill the space behind the grille on the left (near) side between the radiator and the air con water trap, it will be mounted so it doesn't wang around. The K&N is a sort of pinky red covered in stainless steel mesh but you can get a foam cover to go over it if you think it will be too overt!

I'm not expecting it to have any adverse effect on cooling though but I will report it honestly. The hydrolock issue is a big driver in developing this but primarily it is to remove all the engineered restrictions out of the system.

Hi Newton,

Do you have sketches / cad drawings that you would be prepared to publish at this early stage?

Hi Adam, Old fashioned engineer me... It's all in the head!

Some of the guys on the Centenary run have seen the halfway house I have at present but I will photo and document the development throughout so it will become clear. I should be able to have a good go this coming weekend if I can get the bl00dy van finished.

Curious to see if u were designing along the lines of the Trofeo set up

(ps if u require dia. or pics. of Trofeo let me know)

Hi Newton,

Really interesting thread,....wish I had even half your skills/knowledge.

Presumably this will be Ok for facelift 4200? If so very interested.

Adam - if you do not mind passing what you have with diagrams and pics I will see if my brother can whip together a prototype. We are clearing his workshop to see what we have hanging around. There is plenty of high quality tube to see if we can programme a build template for a Trofeo system.

The idea is it will fit ALL 4200 variants....

As far as Trofeo goes, my understanding is this simply has a small mushroom filter wedged on the end of the MAF but as any one race is a max of 200 miles endurance they are not worried about clogging issues or really filtering anything very much. I'm designing with a view to requiring a wash and re-oil once a year or 12,000 miles so a simple grille out, remove to clean and refit. What the Trofeo does have is front brake cooling as per the Asetto Corsa; we did get to look at this at the Panini museum but more about that later (next project).

I guess i would be concerned about the airflow to the rad being partially blocked by the filter. Also a lot of the character of the front end is that gaping black grill. Not sure how it would look with an air filter visible? Don't get me wrong i really want this to work as i am VERY interested.

I have been wondering if the existing air box could be fitted with a float flap on the intake at the bottom and a spring loaded flap half way up towards the MAF in case the bottom flap is closed off by water you still can get air, albeit not ram air..??

Under what circumstances would you need ram air if you are driving through deep water?! Answers on a postcard to; Roberts wonderful world of wtf! ;)

I would never intentionally take the car swimming, but if the bottom (Ram Air) intake is blocked by the float flap, no water, OR AIR, will get through, so a further flap higher up until you stop swimming would be needed..!! WTF THIS IS MY WORLD..!!:boss:

That's not such a crazy idea. Potentially, it could save an engine from hydrolocking. It wouldn't have to completely close the air intake. Once past a certain point the vacuum from the inlet will draw the flap closed and cut off the airflow, stalling the engine in a similar way to a Chalwyn valve (although the reason for use and mode of operation is different). Better to have a stalled engine and wet feet than a wrecked engine.

You would still **** yourself...has the engine stalled because the valve has worked, or has it stalled because its failed!

Having had three Kawasaki Ninjas and rebuilding a fourth, I love a good induction noise. My ZX6RJ2 used to whistle when I was 'on it'.
Freeing up the intake is clearly underrated, everyone goes for exhaust tuning (louder=power) but this is simpler and I'm interested in being in the 20.
