hello, please can anyone confirm that when replacing a manual clutch on a 4200 it can be done without using an SD2/3 diagnostic machine, also my understanding is that clutch wear can not be checked on a manual, only the cambiocorsa, thanks

You won't be the first or last to post in the wrong thread but strangely enough the SM fairies have been known to move things around

steve3200, to answer your question it is yes the 4200 manual transmission clutch can be changed with no SD2/3 setting required. The answer will be the same wherever it is posted. The clutch discs can be seen through ports in the bell housing so you can simply see if the clutch is worn http://www.maseratilife.com/forums/coupe-spyder-gs/59970-6mt-clutch-question.html.

P.S. This following thread also shows that, unless the settings were correctly done initially, the wear readings with an SD are useless. http://www.maseratilife.com/forums/coupe-spyder-gs/82289-need-new-clutch.html

The balancing part of the clutch replacement is arguably required, this can either be by dynamic balancing off the car or using the SD3.

Personally, given the time and expense required to re-do it if the balancing is not correct, I would always go the balancing route - probably doing it off the car.

You do not, of course, need the SD3 to set up the PIS - in your case this is set by your left foot.

If the clutch is the later type with the intermediate plate strapped to the cover, it says in the service manual that it doesn't need balancing. I don't see how it could be done with an SD2/3 as the intermediate plate would "flap" about and upset the balance reading.

I'm sure it could be done by removing the intermediate plate and balancing all the bits separately but that's what the factory's done.

The biting point still needs to be adjusted but it's done mechanically.

Cheers,

Simon

All you're doing when balancing is best matching the flywheel to the clutch assembly. With the attached clutch discs and plate you probably can't do it because it's the clutch shaft that positions these pieces. Wouldn't it be a **** of a lot simpler to just have a machine shop do it out of the car? But I guess when you have an SD unit you have to do something with it.

Do you mean the friction plates? If fitted concentrically then it would be held in place by the pressure plate for balancing.

It's interesting that the service manual says no balancing required, I will ask Ed when I see him next.

No, the intermediate plate that sits between the two pressure plates.

The idea is to balance the rotating mass that's attached to the crankshaft.

With the old style clutch, the two friction plates and the intermediate plate are removed then the cover, pressure plate and flywheel are balanced on the crank with the SD2/3.

With the new style clutch, the intermediate plate is strapped to the cover plate so would affect the balance.
