4200 High Miles & Timing Chain

Hi Forum

I've had my 4200 for over 12 years and have clocked up just over 90,000 miles. I plan to keep the car and would like the forum's thoughts on potential wear-and-tear items that should be investigated: replaced.

I'm concerned about the timing chain on the 4200 as I had one go on my Alfa GTV V6 a few years back. Should it be replaced?

From my experiences with two 4200 both went over the 100,000 miles too I would be more concerned over the oil/water pump unit failing.
This is quite rare but it's happened a few times and I changed one on my second car.
If you have any oil leaks from the front of the engine that would be a good time to check the chains and guides.
On the whole the dry sump engines are very robust.

If there is no noise from that area I would not be too concerned and carry on.

The 4.7 engine suffers from broken chain guides more and variator issue but the 4200 does not.

if the chain becomes slack the ecu will report a timing synchronisation fault but that would be in extreme cases and audibly noticeable first.

The ticking you hear will be the injectors so note that does not sway your decision.

I agree, most modern chains appear to stretch first and throw a timing code. Usually all good for at least 100k.

Thanks for the responses. McGrath's services the car and did report slight engine noise. No errors were reported. James/Paul thought it might be the guides and that I should keep an eye on it.

I'm out of the country at the moment so I need to check on the Oil/Water pump replacement.
