There is a 2003 (MY 2002) coming up at HBC auctions in east London. I am going to see it and will try to buy if in decent conditions
Do you know this stolen recovered car? in the pictures seems to be in good condition but of course the risk is with the clutch and other expensive components.
Not sure about mileage yet.
I will do a HPI just to ensure not cat D or similar.
What do you think?

Says Cat U on the bonnet, thats unrecorded. Also they put a D on the car to denote it drives (Loz told me that) and this car has something else on the bonnet in a circle, can't make it out.

What does Category U mean?
Category U cars are what are known as “unrecorded insurance write offs“. This happens when the vehicle was involved in an accident of some sort but the damage wasn’t reported to the insurance company – this sometimes happens when the driver is uninsured.

Looks ok. I know where HBC's place is. You can see the car through the fence, and if you ask nicely, they'll let you have a look.

They will definitely let me in to have a good look! the problem is no keys! that might cost dear.

Conaero, can a U CAT be one where the damage was not reported because minimal or the claim agreed privately not to impact no claim status?

I will have a look and report

MOT history for you Fran. It looks like it was sat around for a couple of years as it only did 40 ish miles between MOT's. The current MOT expired last month. The rear view mirror looks to be hanging off in one of the pictures. In one of the other pictures the rear seat belts are fastened which is usually done during an MOT test. It possibly has not moved since the last MOT again. 92187 miles at the last MOT.

My old BMW was written off by the insurance co, however this was because BMW quoted a huge amount to replace the panels. No mechanical damage at all, so this was a U, I bought the car and arranged the repairs myself. It was scrapped last week after 17 years and 170,000 of trouble free miles. So a U can be ok.

If you can't (or shouldn't) put them on the rollers for the MOT test, how can you have "Offside Rear rear parking brake recording little or no effort"?
Surely the road test can't pick up if one side is better than the other?
I know the answer, it was tested on the rollers...(maybe)

Would need to be like £6k for it to be worth a punt imo with those miles and lack of any chance to hear the thing run. If servicing has been scrimped on and corners have been cut then you will buy yourself a world of pain, been there done that and it is not pleasant.

Go there with eyes open, listen to it start from cold, listen for any rattles, take an OBD scanner, a magnet and a mirror or inspection camera to check control arms and only then decide what it is worth.

It'll be worth about 30 quid , only a complete fool would buy a maserati at that mileage, no , wait , er

if the bodywork is good and it runs ok I'd bid 5k at it but only if I knew someone who could work on it for reasonable money

If you're thinking of taking it to a specialist for any repair work you could talking big money
