It's "Smart" Motroway, anything which doesn't work very well or is too complicated is labelled as "smart" these days.

It is only a particular section of the M1 in order to ease pollution (both noise and environmental) but could follow onto a Surrey stretch of the M3 later. I must admit if it eases congestion then I'm all for it.

if the traffic is heavy it's heavy, unless every car was fitted with a distance limiter and accelerated and braked simultaneously then you will always get shock waving and the back of the que always comes to a halt. Ease congestion, take cars off the roads is the only way.
I've never found these limited sections work that well unless you remove some of the volume of traffic

Well in all 50 speed zones I've ever driven they have kept traffic flowing. People are not hurtling up to each others bumpers and braking unnecessarily. At least with a speed enforced section people do stick to the same speed, keep their distance and traffic does flow much smoother.

Nothing wrong with the motorways it's the British drivers. We have 3 lanes and congestion everywhere as people have terrible lane discipline. In most of Europe they only have 2 lanes but traffic moves much more easily mainly due to drivers moving in as soon as they have overtaken, even in the busiest sections.

The recent change in the law for bad lane control has made no difference, still too many people hogging the middle or outside lane, it makes my blood boil.

Combination of factors

Too many cars
Lousy drivers
Speed limits that may need re-setting.

All political suicide to address :(

I was equally gob-smacked when they brought in the variable limits on the M25 but I have to grudgingly admit they do work - it's better to get somewhere at a constant 60 mph than be frustrated in stop-start madness. Better for my QP's clutch too!

I just wish they would apply the same logic and allow unlimited - German style - motorways when the same monitoring technology declares the traffic volumes sufficiently light. The number of times I've plodded down the M6 toll at off-peak times and been almost the only car on the road. Surely 70 mph is not required then?

Never ascribe to malice what may be attributed to stupidity. Or in this case, ignorance. Just $0.02 of thought.

Personally I'd argue that they actually 'work' Certainly the don't work all the time. Try Heathrow spur just about any day.

They seem to work sometimes, but I've never seen any way of comparing the before and after.

Tax dole-ites off the road and make motoring a privilege, not a right. The bet way to alleviate congestion is to have fewer cars on the road. With green incentives on cheap 'city' cars there are more vehicles registrations and with better manufacturing processes there are fewer getting scrapped, resulting in logjam.

Keep the traffic moving as quickly as you can, not slow it down..!! 70mph in this day and age with most cars now built to do well over 100mph, is crazy and designed to catch as many motorists in a fine situation, so as to collect more money..!! If the limit is 60mph, you will still get a build up of traffic and all it will do is to make it a longer journey, stupid IMHO..!!

Do they? When's that then anti clockwise j25 to 8 most Fridays from 15.00hrs of standing traffic, 6.30 am everyday standing traffic 21 down to 15. Too many cars and we're buying more now since 2009. Remove the cars is the only way ever. Benny's got the right idea.

Cant comment on the motorways - but in town get rid of buses and turn off all the traffic lights.
You only ever get stuck behind a bus and no more waiting at red lights looking at an empty junction.

Might just work - traffic was much lighter during a bus strike...........................

RSM,
That's a good way to look at the problem... what are the causes of traffic slowing down and finally coming to a standstill..??
Cheers
