Alcantara dash top (and trim clip question)

Hi all,

I have been thinking about covering the dash-top in my GS with black alcantara for ages. I currently have what I assume is black vinyl and it's a little shiny in the sun and also not quite new-looking as it could be. I have finally found time to look at this and have found a local trimmer in Wimbledon who can do this for me - they seem to know what they're talking about and tell me they've worked on a few Maseratis recently.

I removed the dash-top myself - using an old thread from the forum - it would have been a 10 minute job if it wasn't for one of the screws under the central air vent which wouldn't move whatever I did. That necessitated a trip to B&Q to buy a dremel to cut the screw head off - which was a little scary but worked fine in the end.

The dash will get dropped off at the trimmers this week, and be back a couple of weeks after (it's not a big task they tell me, but as I'm in no hurry I said they could fit it in among other jobs). Total cost £450.

I'll post some pictures once I get it back and refitted.

There is a question in amongst all this: I removed the interior trim above the doors and on the A-pillars - and they use a type of "fir-tree" trim clip - similar to this (though the Maz ones are yellow)

I was inspired this morning to buy some replacements for these as mine are a little 'used' - clearly that top trim has been removed and refitted a few times in the car's life. However I don't have access to the car at the moment to measure them. Does anyone know what size they are?

Cheers,
Ben.

Would be interested to see this once its done Ben. I've saw an MCV with the Alcantara dash before and that looked great.

£450 to trim the dash top in Alcantara???? Does it come with a happy ending?

SW19 prices, I lived there once and certainly couldn't afford to move back. I sold a 3 bed terrace in Merton Hall Road for £375k 15 years ago which I was very happy with, they're worth £1.1m now but I try to keep smiling ...

The Xmas tree clips are main dealer only and are usually yellow in colour.

Call Gray Paul (where I got mine from ask for Ross) or Meridian. Ask for the Ferrari ones as they are 24p each as opposed to the Maserati ones which are £1.20 each. Go figure!

Still have a couple in the garage somewhere.

Thanks chaps.

I have to admit I only got one quote for the work - it was £350 if it didn't need stitching and £450 if it did (and it did of course). I expect there are cheaper options elsewhere but travel time isn't something I've got and who can be bothered to try to package up a dashtop for posting!

Am dropping it off this week so photos to follow eventually.

What ever the cost, it will look good
I had trim parts off my old Elise retrimmed in alcantara including the instrument binnacle and steering column shrouds.
I would be tempted to do the rear parcel shelf to match though!

My Integrale, Phase 3 Thema turbo and a Dedra all had Alcantara interiors, it will look great on the dash top, will be very interested in the finished article ....

Had mine done on my GS. The chap who done it is semi retired. Still works a few days a week and is brilliant. One of his clients is Nick Mason as does all upholstery work on his collection. The bulk of the work is the template and it WILL need stitching. There are 2 grades of Alcantara, one for wear areas (seats etc) and a thinner grade for trimming. Cost me around £200 and I supplied the Alcantara. Based near Swindon. I can give you details and pictures if you want.

Forgot to say I always replace the yellow fixings anytime I remove trim unless they are perfect. Always keep a bag of 10 to hand. If you want part number let me know. Nothing worse than loose noisy trim for the sake of a few quid.

Thanks Paul - but I'm sorted on clips now. Meridien had 10 in stock so I bought them all!
Thanks for the recommendation for the trimmer too - I'll stick with the local guy for this one, but love to see photos if you have them anyway.

WOW!! that looks great, after a load of 'faffing' about I had my 4200 roof lining redone in grey alcantara, it looks so nice that I was also thinking of doing the same to my dash. The clips you have are the same as the ones used to secure the roof trims which I also got from Ross for 25p each. it sounds like I bought them am bar 10!!! he's a great helpful guy Ross who has helped me out a few times in the past.

Finally, I have found time to refit my dash and take some photos. This is the end result of the retrim.
