Am I foolish for considering this 4200 CC as my first Maserati?

Thanks for the warm welcome fellas.

And as I thought, perhaps this is one I walk away from. I was convincing myself that a lower miler at a low price was worth a punt but as mentioned above, I would be better off looking at paying the £16k for a 'sorted' car.

Gazcw - as you say, Craig has good reputation but is selling the car on behalf of someone else. He was surprisingly sketchy about details on this car, which had me concerned. It drove well, or so I thought.

So, the search continues!

What is the general opinion on manual vs auto on the 4200's?

CC ( robotised manual actually) is the one you want, manual is an acquired taste, only 10% were manuals originally

MrCoop,

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Secondly, I would highly recommend you speak to Richard Grace. He is a sponsor of the forum and will sort you out with a car that has been inspected and repaired (where nessasary) to a high standard. You will also get a warranty for any niggles that need ironing out.

I am a relative newbie having purchased my first Maserati in March this year. My car is a 05 facelift 4200 CC and has been reliable over the 6 months I've had it. In which time I've put on 16k on the car through various road trips and European holidays. These cars do cost a lot to keep on the road though and you definitely need a pot for servicing and any unexpected costs.

Give Richard a call and he will source you the best car available for the money you have to spend. You won't regret it!

I would also caution that some times (not always) Cat D and insurance write off is a reason for the lack of history and hence no way of being able to validate the low mileage. So i would not trust the mileage. assume its not a low mileage car, reckon on 45000 miles in reality for that age, maybe as high as 60000 miles. There is no fancy technology to stop people from clocking these cars.

Never, EVER, believe a word that issues forth from the mouth of a car salesman, no matter how nice, convincing, or friendly they are.

How do you know when a used car salesman is lying......................his lips are moving! BOOM BOOM

....can't say fairer than that Pat........

Obviously a sweeping generalization by me in regards to car sales people, with no basis in reality.

It reminds me of the headstone, 'Here lies a Politician and an Honest Man'. As to how they got two bodies in the same coffin I will never know....

You can't go far wrong giving Dicky Grace a call, he will find you something decent in budget..!! He is a car salesman though, but pretty honest and a nice guy..!!

As the owner of a Cat D car, I would run from that one. These things are all about history and where mine has it in spades (it might be the most well known cat maserati in the UK thanks to this forum), this car is missing that.

Simply, if you can afford a non-cat cat with good history, don't bother with the gamble.

As Mav says, 8k or run as fast as you can.

Noted Dem. It's even better now with more bits and pieces of lovely carbon, stereo upgrade and a few grand at the specialist keeping it tip top.

Well said, I too have a car on the register but only bought it once David Askew (who I bought it from and who I trust 100%) was able to confirm the mileage & history having painstakingly traced it all back through the supplying dealer & Maserati UK.

Of course everything has a price though and this one for me should be very low
