Another 3200 CEL

Went over a rough patch of road a few weeks ago and the CEL came on and the car went into limp mode.

Got home and listened and there was a strange high pitched whine from (near) the throttle body.
Unplugged the TB and remade the connection, did a throttle reset and CEL was out.

Was out last Saturday and went over a bump in the road - the CEL comes on and back into limp mode.
Could hear the same whine, so tried the same trick (giving the contacts a bit of a clean) and the CEL went out.
(the whine stops when the TB is unplugged)

The TB was replaced about 20k ago and the pedal pot about 15k ago.

Could this be the TB on the way out again, or could it just be sticking and need a bit of a clean?

All thoughts gratefully received

Cheers

As you may well know Gordon im not a 3200 owner , but it has become apparent that the connections need to be part of a regular maintenance programme , both V Bird and Nigelo advocated regular contact cleaning due to Italian electric foibles ,altho it usually seemed to work i always seemed to think of it as a temporary fix ,

Personally i think the T/body's have a shelf life in terms of miles , probably due to the moving parts inside , its gradually becoming clear that Boomerangs (Luuks) refurbishment , which is a solid state version ie no moving parts seems to be the only true reburb that has any real longevity and reliability , it has to be the way forward, certainly all those that have had it done so far are extremely happy and have had no further probs

Answers simple to me

I'll try a decent contact clean and then a bumpy road :)

Failing that its time to save my pennies for Luuk.

Gordon,

Sounds like the throttlebody is on its way! if you are anywhere near an indi with an SD2/3 tester its worth confirming its the throttlebody. the wine buzzing thing is normal. for the sake of information, I ALSO DO THE CONTACTLESS UPGRADE IN THE UK ...... PM me for details

cheers

Bill sounds good.....can you give any more details for the forum...maybe include your offer of up-grading in the alternative parts section?

hi P
Nothing much more to say realy.... I have been doing the refurb and upgrade for around 18 months now, I have done over 55 units so far with only one problematic throttlebody which had been to different refurbisher before hand. My own TB has been going for 18 months with no issues! Its a one off upgrade so once its done its done(!) What every body want to know I guess is the cost...Currently its £500+ VAT I know its more than what others (Luuk) charge. The difference is I give a lifetime warranty on the work that I do as I represent in the UK the original and only Company openly doing this, Xemodex. I have to say this is not a business from me, as the TB has to be sent to canada to be upgraded, so the "profit" is beer money! I am working on both points (cost and time) so watch this space! I found the resemblance with the volvo TB around 2 years ago, posted my findings on the other forum and have been doing this ever since. So, lets get rid of this plague and enjoy these wonderful cars!

cheers

Good news Bill......hoping the word gets out about your end of things and this problematic aspect of 3200 ownership is soon a thing of the past!

Hi Gordon,

I really would advise to check the ecu for faults stored.
If you really had a brandnew TB then, it would suprise me if it was bad again after only 20k miles.
The later units where improved and had an increased lifetime and i assume you had an improved unit mounted then.
All in all, it could well be that there is another cause for your limpmode and i would not spend any money on both the TB or pedalpot, before i was sure one of them was the cause.
Regards,

Luuk.

Luuk,

I have a receipt from Meridien Modena for £1400 dated Feb 2007 for a new TB and another for £437 for the pedal pot in Dec 2007
The ECU was replaced in Sept 2007 (£1479)
(a very expensive year for the previous owner)

Once I've had my stored codes read I'll be back for advice.

Cheers

Gordon
