ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CREW VANS MAYBE VITO DUALINER?

I recently sold the Toyota Hilux Invincible Double Cab pickup we had in the business as it didn't really suit my needs. I inherited it from an outgoing Director and it was massive but didn't really use the back seats as it was all work use. We had the back box so it had a decent sized load area but wasn't much better than a large estate really.

I have been using my XC90 mainly for work use and it is a great all in one car. However still a bit compromised for my broad use. So have decided a mid sized van would be better. It will only be used for work use so a commercial the business can claim the VAT back for and get decent tax relief on. So something like Vito, Transporter, Trafic, Vivaro, Dispatch, Expert etc.

I will mainly use driving on my own however with some jobs sometimes another person or 2 or 3 so a crew van works well. I can get other contractors in when occasionally required or remove the 2nd row of seats to increase load-space when not required. The Vito is very car like to drive with 2 good captain style armchair seats rather than 3 across the front. Therefore more comfortable for me most of the time. You can get a Vito with a 3.0 V6 diesel and decent auto box and the Sport especially with the Brabus alloys looks decent enough.

Now there are obvious complexities that HMRC has introduced around some of these crew vans being vans. With some being regarded as a car then attracting BIK tax. Most of this seems to be around 3 key points. It is generally regarded as a van for tax purposes if:
1. The payload is over 1000kg.
2. The load space is bigger than the passenger space.
3. If it is used for business/commercial use with zero, inconsequential or very occasional personal use (emergencies or when other car does start etc.)

Has anyone looked at these or done this or have any knowledge, advice or opinions please?

Don’t quote me on this but I think HMRC class a Duoliner Sport as a car as they consider that it’s primary roll. For it to be a van it would have to be one of the bogo spec low roof vitos but with an extra row of seats. A phone call to a dealers would probably be your best bet.

I vaguely recall HMRC deciding our Astra vans with two jump seats were cars and we got rid of them for just the 2 seat version.

Great, thanks. Sure let us know if they have. I think it will need to be new version 2015 on as previous versions I think are all shy of 1000kg payload.

There was a table HMRC did that detailed what at the time was classed as van or car. The Sport aspect is not an issue necessarily. It is more about payload, ratio of load space to passenger space.

There was an issue when you choose the luxury seat pack or whatever they called in that made it be treated as a car.

I think you’re right about the luxury thing. I’m not surprised they changed the rules most of our guys were using them pretty much as company cars but without the BIK.

Just spoken to him, sold it to a friend to transport his son around karting.

I can see why the HMRC do it but the main thing should be around use as often it catches the people that genuinely want to use it for work/commercial use.

There are plenty of choices for commercial vehicles , the problem arose when manufacturers started blinging up crew cabs so people would think of them as a car rather than a van and save a bucket full of tax while their profits rose.

I don't blame HMRC for moving the goalposts , I blame the manufacturers for bending the rules to increase sales.

The service engineer at work had Mercedes Vito's for years as they did one with a big engine which he chipped to over 200bhp , I can't see him paying car tax on a works van so I'd think they comply , he changed to a VW transporter 50th anniversary one about 4 years ago which looked like it had seats out of a Bentley in it , all quilted leather , both had 5 seats

Saw a really nice custom built Transporter but seriously expensive. It was 4 years old and £36k! I might sack off the 2nd row of crew seats and just get a swb jobbie with 3 seats in the front. Would really prefer a petrol.

Absolutely no idea about these or the tax implications but the local builder we go roadblocking with has a Transporter and I was shocked by the spec and performance the thing has. Inside it looks like a Bentley and goes like a scalded cat and then you can get 5 bug adults, 5 mountain bikes and all the gear in the back without thinking about it.

Made me think
