Would it not be best to actually prove it works 100% in real life situations by the normal punter before letting them loose with a McDonald's and a **** movie!

They've probably worked out a way to charge extra for it , safety 0 profit 1

Why 100%? Drivers don't work 100% in real life ;)

It’s scary enough having the lane departure system activated on my XJ with the car trying to stop me making an overtake ( first thing I turned off), let alone giving up total control.
Complete madness in my book and there must be far more important areas to tech to develop.

I dread this... the number of drivers already half asleep at the wheel now is bad enough, with nothing for some drivers to do, I can only see this going one way...but I guess in time the flabby meat in the car will be taken out of the equation all together either by legislation or cost/insurance... hate the thought.

First step towards the corralling on the motorways to maintain everyone at the same speed and distance. Also another excuse for the middle lane hoggers to just stay put whilst they doze behind the wheel.

Would you not want every test to go without fail as once live, and as numbers on the road grow there will be failures for sure. Allowing numpties to watch TV etc. is going to make those failures significant as not able to take control if not looking.

If you start with a xx% failure rate on tests you are likely fooked in real world.

There already are. Humans fail at driving all the time. (Nearly 28k KSI's in the last year) Don't get my wrong, emotionally I agree with you, but logically all the changes where the risk comes from.

All that should matter is will there be more, or fewer failures....

I suggest we run anyone sleeping or reading the paper off the road. That will resolve the issue. :as002:

I do wonder if there are a lot of new drivers that haven't driven on a motorway since they passed their test in feb/march because the amount of them driving in lane 3 of 4 on the smart motorways is mind boggling

I came up behind a woman in an A3 doing 57mph in lane 3 with nothing in 1&2 , 4 was bumper to bumper so I flashed the lights , she gave me the ****** handshake and carried on so I overtook her pulled back into lane one and yeah 3 is fine i'll stay here

It's definitely got worse in the last few months

I think it’s more that driving in the “middle” lane has become the norm for an ever increasing number of drivers including so called professional van drivers. Driving on a motorway isn’t part of the test and the rules are forgotten about straight away. I nearly had an accident the other week with someone coming off the slip road and straight into the middle lane even though there was northing in the inside.

I've seen a few do that , the worst are the ones in fast german cars , i've seen them make it to the outside lane before the end of the sliproad , quick glance in the mirror and they're off
