My wife is always shouting 'CAMERA' or 'WATCH YOUR SPEED' or 'IT'S ON RED', plus other unpublishable phrases.

She let me down a few weeks ago - I asked for the photo - see below.

Red Light Jump.jpg

So that's another 3 points and a load of beer money down the drain. Not to mention the insurance hike.

It's a fair cop. Guilty officer.

There is running from that one as I see it Moz, isn't it ok if your front wheels are past the line when it turns red? If the wheels were behind the line then fair enough but I'd see it as room to manoeuvre.

I asked my wife - she said NO. I asked all my friends - they all said NO. Then I asked Bruce Forsyth - and he said POINTS MAKE PRIZES. So I'm thinking I might go with him.....

That is pretty conclusive. My rule is if I can get my front wheels over the line before it turns red, I'm ok, that still stands but the photo is misleading as compared to the notes in the advice.

There is no arguing this. The WHOLE car must have crossed the line when the light turns red. Also when approaching a Amber light you MUST STOP.

The above is the law.

Its annoying as you can never have seen the Red light and yet get done for going through.

General Principle

It sounds obvious but camera traffic light enforcement is about when the signals change from amber to red and the offending vehicle is behind the stop line, but instead of stopping as required, the driver continues against the red light. If this is so then how do the photographs illustrate this? As I understand it the answer rests with the data shown in the accompanying boxes. For example if the light has been red for four seconds when the first photograph is taken and the vehicle speed is recorded at 30 mph (44 feet per second) then this shows that vehicle was around 176 feet behind the stop line when the signals changed from amber to red. (The precise distance is variable because the vehicle speed may not have been constant) Devon and Cornwall Police Camera Safety Partnership have some photographs of real events on their website which explains this better than me.

Paul

Thanks guys. One thing I spotted after looking at various websites on the subject is the elapsed time since the light turned red is recorded. In my case this was 9.3secs. You can see it in the photos.

Where on earth was I?

I'll tell you where I was. This camera is a speed-on-green camera [which means it's a red light camera when the lights are red, and a speed camera when they are not red]. I was concentrating so much on keeping my speed down that I clearly failed to notice the red light!! What a knob!

I should be shot.

Living in Bristol I'm totally paranoid about traffic light cameras - have unintentionally driven through several but touch wood never been "caught". You have my sympathies Moz!

So for the benefit of fellow SMers, I'm now being summonsed to court. I was not allowed the fixed penalty of 3 points plus a £60 fine due to the fact that the red light was red for 9.3secs before I crossed the line. I'm due to appear on a charge of 'driving without due care and attention' on May 20th. I am pleading guilty by post and not attending. I believe the max points is 9, and the max fine is means tested to £1k.

It's not the fine that really bothers me, it's the impact on my insurance premium.

So back to the 'speed-on-green' thing. It's absolutely true - these cameras are speed cameras when on a green light [30mph], and red-light cameras when the lights are red. I am pleading mitigation based on the fact that I was concentrating so much on keeping below 30mph, that I failed to realise that the lights were in fact RED. That plus that fact that this is my first offence of this kind, and the road was empty.

Wish me luck guys, and y'all take care out thar!.
