Beautiful noise!

I think the noise energy thing is a little more complex than most people think. The key with cars is flow, its all about getting the gas to flow out of the engine as efficiently as possible and it varies with RPM, and quite a few other things. The noise is not actually harnessed as motive power if you keep it in, it is just absorbed in the mechanics of the exhaust I think, so I am not sure the extra noise necessarily removes power. What normally happens is that the modifications to the exhaust alter the air flow and make the air flow less efficient so the engine is less powerful. if the mods are done with a rolling road and the ability to alter the fuel mix and ignition map, it can be good. However it is generally very difficult to reproduce the instrumentation the manufacturer uses to optimise an engine and its exhaust. I did some work in Lucas Research in the engine test centre and was impressed with what can be done.

Petrol contains an amount of energy per unit, approx 20 per cent of which the engine turns into mechanical energy. All the rest goes to waste in the form of heat, light and noise. By messing with the exhaust we are making the most of the noise part turning it from waste into aural pleasure.

We do know that Maserati de-tuned the Ferrari engine at the behest of their masters, so as not to show up the Ferrari, the massive cats on the Maserati do nothing but choke the engine to a degree, removing them releases power..!! Same as when you put your hand over the exhaust, eventually it will choke up and stop the engine..!!

Indeed. Adding silencers (leaving aside any purging and tuning of them) simply turns that noise which is effectively wasted already, into more heat.

We all know that global warming is an major issue, and modern music is ****, ergo it should be a legal requirement to reduce global warming by reducing heat production and increase aural pleasure by drowning out Cowell et al

There was a thread on here with a 3200 that had the back boxes removed and replaced with straight throughs - sounded rather nice as he drove off down the street and you could still hear it half a mile away. It was done by someone on the south coast - I mentioned it to Giallo's when mine was in for service last year, they knew who it was.

Not good for the neighbours but I don't live next door
