I managed to navigate you tube for the first time!!! http://youtu.be/5SvN6nez3e8 API back boxes, with thermal wrap & damping sheets to reduce the booming inside. I found the buzzing thing yesterday and fixed before you ask!!! Not a particularly noisy set up but I like it.

Thermal wrap to the exhausts / manifods has been popular in the modified car scene for some time the thing that worries me is that it has a reputation for causing the exhausts to rust much more quickly.

The back boxes are stainless and i have had this set up for close to 5 years and the boxes look fine still, so I am not sure about corrosion, but i think stainless boxes makes a big difference.

From Matt's post in the neighbour trouble thread, maybe £100. Although that may be only for the switch gear.
The more I think about it, the more I feel that may well be where I'm heading.

X-Pipe then simply vent the exhaust on a valve. And I have a remote plib that has three extra functions :D

I'd stay clear of the QTP electric values as they will fail , its just a matter of time , and it will be a pain to replace , like most exhaust parts !
The best option IMHO is the pneumatic air operated valves as used in the GS. The control unit is in the engine bay so much easier to swap out.
I'm looking to build a larini style valved back box but without the price tag , I have managed the source the value air controls at a good price so shoot me a PM if you want the details..

Very neat. It's not like they'd be hard to get to either.

Tell me, are they spring loaded, so you need to keep 12v on them to keep them open, or do you apply 12v one way to open and the 12v the other to close?

Cheers

Oh and how did you fit the Y-pipes? Are they but welded, or do they have a larger OD than the pipes so you can slip them over (phnarr)

All being well there will be an increase in noise tonight :)

You can get the y pipes to slide over the pipes, (2.5in OD), but I welded them in place to prevent the weight of the motors turning the assembly around. I had to cut the angled outlets off and re-position them to direct the exhaust gases down and away. The electrical connectors are frankly ****. the phono connectors from the motors are best disposed of. This also means a much smaller hole is needed in which to pass the wiring through to the boot. It takes some practice to get the hang of the remote key fobs, but you will in time. Forcing the flaps opened or closed past their limit can damage them.

The noise is epic!

Thanks, QP :)

I'm assuming then that the valves simply turn one way with voltage at one polarity, and the other with the other?

Noise is wasted energy, Fact!

Dave

Very true but is this energy of any use to the engine at all by the time it has passed through the manifold restrictions and the cats? As far as insanity goes... I'm good with my sanity thanks and we both agree on that!!!

Indeed noise is energy, but why is my drag racing bike, along with most others, fitted with an open exhaust? In the scramble for more BHP, I would imagine this is an area that has been looked into.

On my QP, an 'open exhaust' does indeed result in lower 0-60, but from a certain point in the rev range, it increases the power output.

The reason I have fitted the valved cutoffs is to duly impress the my passengers with the noise (noise equates with speed for most), while not having to try too hard in the speed stakes.

I like the sound [sic] of that!!! :)

Mark's 'advertising' at Brunty yesterday worked very well indeed to pull the punters in...

Very true, most of my passengers chose the car because of the noise as well as the colour. A few people queued for a while to have a lap, one guy for an hour and a half while I took some of the Wishes4Kids kids around the track. Another guy said I made his dog go mental and "sh1t itself" as he watched me launching from the start gate and decided he had to have a go because of it!
