Hi,
I have had issues with the steering wheel airbag covering bubbling up, This seems to have been a common problen on earlier 4200'2 and possibly 3200's as the part number is the same.
I have removed the airbag and peeled back the cover cleaned and glued back on, on a number of occasions but it never really seemed to last. As soom as the weather went a bit damp it seemed to bubble again. After a number of tries the covering (faux leather) was looking decidedly tired so i enquired about recovering through emblem with a local firm that they use. The price was a littel high at around £200 but they could also change the colour to match my Avorio interior as long as they had a match for the same price.
I noticed last week that a breaker in Irland had 3 of these airbags for sale in various condition 2 3200's ana 4200 all in standard black at between £80- and £195 so i became interested again.
Well after a bit of thought i decided that really didn't have anything to lose by attemping the recover myself first as a replacement or a full recover were the only options.
I searched the web last night for a local fabric shop and ventured out to one this morning. I found that they had both the black faux leather and also what looked identical to my avorio so i bought half a metre off the roll of each at a total cost of £4.99
So in the last hour I have:
1. removed the airbag saftley as per instructions in older threads.
2. removed the covering by peeling back and then cutting up to the centre cap and pulling out and off.
3. cleaned thourghly with white spirit to remove all previous glue.
4. cut a piece of the Avorio coloured faux leather to the same shape as the original and cut out the centre hole.
5. I found that making a number of small cuts aroiund the centre hole allowed me to slide the material in under the centre cap, usin my finges and nails allowed me to do this without marking the material.
6. applied spray glue to both the material and the plastic base then after a short wait smothed out from the centre and folded over the edges using a thin blunt knife to jam it around the back.
7. waited an hour occasionally checking and applying a smothing pressure to any areas that looked like they were not adhering well.
8. replaed the airbag into the steering wheel and reset the battery isolator back to on.
As this was my first attempt at a complete recover I am at present very pleased and as i decided to use the Avorio I think that it looks great in the car. ( I know not everyone likes coloured steering wheels) .
I have plenty of material left so if I decide to return to standard black, its only an hour or so's work.
