cam cap modification

I am in the process of buying a 2009 Quattroporte automatic and the inspection report has noted the common variator rattle on start up. The car has 46k on the clock.

I have heard that having the cam caps modified to include a check valve to stop the oil returning to the sump is a solution and this doesn't require the timing gear removed.

Has anyone had this done and did it work?

Yes. Yesterday. and it works just fine

Can't see how you could do it without the timing removed, as the end caps have to go to Maserati for drilling.

Bill at Giallo was £4.1k

With the engine timed up you could remove the caps to be modified and then refit.
Personally as you would have the rocker covers off take the front cover off to check the chain guides as the plastics can fail too making the chains too slack.
I did half a dozen working for Maserati.

Many thanks for your help guys. The link made very interesting reading. I sold my Gransport a couple of years ago and I forgot how friendly and useful this forum is!
