Car Storage Facilities?

Thanks Andy. I think I would be looking at low to mid end value cars...with hopefully a majority of mid value cars. I agree high end would need another level of storage security.

There is GP Cars very close to me who has some quite nice cars & don't think he has silly high end storage.

The must be lots of modular buildings that could be knocked up & be pretty secure such as the stuff they build at Goodwood for the outdoor motor show.

Wow....that looks awesome. Not sure I could compete with that but still seems like a decent business a division below that.

Is that the place you went for a job? If so I can see why you went. Would be my dream job as well I think. Always wanted to work with cars and have worked with IT/tech for the last 20 years instead. I fancy cars for the next 20 years....well hopefully!!

Yes mate, they said I was over qualified ie wanted someone younger to pay half what I earn. Very nice climate controlled 70k square foot facility, top security with many financial backers like Derek Bell, Ferrari Classiche chairman etc so you can imagine the cars they will have in storage. They plan to see how this goes then expand to many facilities. The Manager said he used to manage a private collection worth £20 million and you wouldn't put a daily runabout into the places where the guy used to store his. There is a real gap in the market for this sort of thing especially bespoke car storage and management.

Cheers Phil. I can see why you wanted to work there now!

I think your right. My research so far is showing a few gaps in the market that need to be filled. I have all the people/contacts around me to put the whole lot together end>end and offer a real feature rich product/service. Just need to see if the numbers look enticing & good enough.

The classified section of Octane has a “Storage and Transportation” section which may be worth a look re potential competition. I use Historit in Bicester http://www.historit.co.uk/ on the ex RAF Bicester site which is excellent, costs £130pm including VAT and they are full service (e.g. 24 hour access, and they have a rent by the hour workshop too) with good access to related services on the Bicester Heritage site. They aim mainly at classics.

Rent by the hour workshop are great service to have especially in the mid range market as quite a few owners like to tinker their classics.

I went to a meet today at one of these high end storage facilities, they charged £5/day for cars, £2/day for bikes and £1/day for a set of alloy wheels

No idea about start up costs but he has a top notch security system and no doubt a crazy insurance policy considering the collectors items he has in there

£5 per day....wow that must be high end. Not sure I can complete with that.

I have done quite a look of looking around and I think there is a slight gap in between the low end and high end stuff. I think I can do better than the guys like Storacar but maybe a little bit under the guys at Windrush. The pricing of Storacar starts at £25 per week. The pricing at Windrush is £52 per week for their inclusive package based in the Cotswolds and even more expensive in their West London location.

I think I can look at doing a service closer to Windrush but with pricing closer to Storacar. If it is good then gives me the opportunity to maybe grab some customers that might like a Windrush level service but at a lower price point.

Out of curiosity how do those storage facilities keep the car batteries charged up? Surely a bi-weekly start up doesnt get the job done...
Are all the cars plugged in?

I think they have CTEK auto battery conditioners plugged in.

Still working through the numbers on this as the building/housing costs are much more expensive than I had envisaged/hoped. It is OK if you have a large building ready to use or can build one that can be used for something else at a later date or on resale.

However the semi permanent option that was my primary option seem much more than I would have thought. About £60k for a 12 space structure. A permanent structure would cost that to build and maybe less so looking at alternative quotes/options. Need to get the numbers down.

I pay £15 a week to store my old 3200GT...that includes full dehumidifier systems, battery CTEK charging, Full insurance and if you want to fiddle about with your car a couple of days notice..

I though that was pretty good. You have to provide your own cover though!
