Cat flap...

Just come back from Shiltech where Geoff and the gang kindly fitted a Larini X-Pipe they found lying in a corner somewhere, (on trial basis) to my GS Spyder.

However, on fitting they discovered that one of the secondary cats is shot. Bugger.

Not too aware about this part of the car, but from searching seems main contenders are Larini sports cats at £2.5K or.......???

Shame as I quite like the subtle aural improvement of the X Pipe on its own but this issue adds another variable to the mix.

Any advice in plain English??

Sorry to hear this Dave.

The good news is that it doesn't need to cost anything like that much. Look for a set of weld in high-flow cats. FD / Performance Italia offer a pair at £750, but they're available for much less if you search. Trick is to get the correct diameter so you don't need a reducing section. Look for 200 cells. Miltek have a good range. I think Marios does a weld in cat as well?……….

Thanks Miles. Will check things out as you suggest.

Don't want to spend a fortune on these but don't want to go sub quality either.

Anyway, hope you are both well.

Yes, both good. Glad it's weekend. Hope you're both well?

If you ask the guys to check the pipe bore and the cut length then you'll have what you need to check which high-flow cats would fit.

It'll mean a few days in the shop whilst they're welded, but there are very good quality cats available that are far better then the dated OEM parts and at a fraction of the cost.

Hope you get it sorted without too much hassle.

Done a bit of researching and thinking of going with decat pipes to get a bit more noise and bypass the squished section.

Anyone have experience of this (Larini or other) in terms of performance feel and noise level increase.
I have GS standard set up at the moment.

Cheers

Check to see if you have the US style or the European style manifolds and first section. The US one has a cat built into the manifold and a single cat in the pipe, the euro one has no cat in the manifold, and two in the pipe.

If you're US style you can have straight-through pipes and still stay legal for MOT. If Euro, you are better having a single sports cat in the pipes to help pass emissions tests.

I have euro-spec, and a previous owner installed some sports cats modelled on larini, it feels and sounds good, but I think I need an un-silenced x-pipe to make it sound better!

OK need to get this sorted so bumping this thread

Car in at Shiltech and one cat completely shot.
US style system with a Larini x pipe fitted. Like the sound just now as it is.

Not paying 2.5k for Larini cats. Probably going for either Larini de cat or muffled de cat.

Any experiences?

Talk to Matt. He can source you de-cat pipes in stainless that also have twin bore pipes instead of the squish section. They'll be a fraction of the Larini pipes cost, but be a LOT louder.

Failing that, I have my original GS secondary cat pipes that I could sell you for a very fair price. They'd be a direct replacement for yours.

Update.

Gone with Larini de cat pipes and with Larini x pipe and oem boxes I'm really happy with it.

Civilized with sport off but hit the button and it burbles nicely then at 4000rpm it roars.

Love it!
