Childhood Maserati Introduction

This is the car that made me want a Maserati. A Bora in a glorious shade of 70s Lilac!

This is the first Maserati I saw as a young boy, so took this photo. Even annotated it on the back! (Can’t recall exactly where it was, but somewhere in Yorkshire.)

I've told the story before, but until the June/July copy of CAR I was a huge Ford fanboy. RS200, RS500, BTCC, WRC etc. That particular issue had the first review of the then-new Escort RS Cosworth, a car I'd been waiting for since its rally car debut in 1990.
It looked so mad, so extreme, I didn't think anything could come close to visual aggression.

Then I turned to the review of the Maserati Shamal, appearing out of the pages like the Alien hatchling bursting through someone's chest in the films. From there my love of Maserati, and Italian cars in general, grew...

Many years later I got to drive that very car for Modern Classics magazine. Richard Grace sold it a couple of years ago; one day, maybe, I'll buy it off the current owner.

I had that one and also this one. I hate teenage me for destroying or losing all my toy cars. Wish I could go back and slap the spotty git!

This was the first Maserati i ever saw I had just started my apprenticeship in electronics

and the boss rolled up in a 3500 cab. I stood there in my dungarees with holes in my pockets, and just stared at that work of art.
