Clutch matters

Though you guys might be interested in the clutch tweaking on my 4200 CC. I had the clutch replaced about 2000 miles ago, though with no flywheel replacement as that had been done the last time. Since then it's taken a while to settle and I've been back to the dealer a couple of times for them to tweak the PIS setting. Symptoms were that I would get lots of clutch slip - particularly in slow moving traffic.

Last time I went in they adjusted it from 4.9 to 4.6 and it made it much better. However a few weeks later it was slipping again. This time we tried a different tack - moved the PIS point up a lot - and after some playing around between 5.3 and 5.5 we settled on 5.4. The theory is that while going down seemed originally to fix the issue, actually it's not pushing the clutch down early enough and so at slow speed the anti-stall kicks in and depresses the clutch anyway, hence the slip. Moving the PIS point right up to 5.4 seems to give me a nice smooth take off from stationary and so far (it was only done today) is working well.

I'm not overly mechanical so may have not quite explained correctly - however an interesting little lesson on how the clutch systems work on the CC I thought. Hopefully it'll resolve my clutch-slipping issues as it's a little frustrating when you're trying to drive smoothly (it's never been a problem when driving it very hard of course).

Cheers,
Ben.

Ben, that is very interesting. Most of us would, like you, nail down the PIS in to the mid to late 4's but you have shown that extending this can work better.

Cheers for the heads up.

Surely the anti-stall will kick in irrespective of the PIS settling? I can see that 5.4 will give smooth changes when under 'drive' but if it's slipping in first from 'drive' to 'idle' (start/stop traffic) I'd be thinking either the flywheel or release bearing is worn.

All interesting stuff. Not sure what the PIS is on my current Maser, but need to check. My FD DBW is great but 1st and 2nd changes are a PITA still when trying to accelerate quickly in Normal mode.

Thats the GS software Pat as we know , the gearbox software was designed/altered to drive more sympathetically for the everday driver , but as Andy (stradaman) will testify my 4200 is mega aggressive right the way through the gears , the achilles heel being in slow bumper to bumper traffic, much preferable in my book as it was an occasional car , GS is and would be better as an everyday car coping with both types of traffic but as we know there is that compromise

Yes Loz, you can not trickle it from stand still. Engine wants to die, then doesn't, and clutch then slips, and car slightly kangeroos. Give it revs from go, and no probs.
