Clutch wear

It's that topic again...

When should a clutch be changed? i.e. what reading is cause for concern?

Mine's at ~40% and the garage is saying I should change it, as the bearing and position sensor are both knackered (car won't go into gear or start).

I'm not against changing it but £4k is not a trifling amount.

I know the readings aren't even that accurate but it was 5.9% at 39k and 40.2% at 61k. It's now at 65k and the recommendation is to change.

Thoughts?

If the bearing and position sensor are knackered, and it won't go into gear, then I don't think you have much choice, and if they have to strip it to replace either of those makes perfect sense to replace all of it whilst it is apart.

As above - The new plate will not be £4k on its own. If they are in there doing the bearing and position sensor, then it should only add<1k to the total price.

Change everything while its out, including the flywheel (if its worn) and all the bearings. And shop around , that quote sounds expensive.

If it’s inclusive of VAT, and is for the clutch plate, spigot bearing, release bearing and position sensor as well as fluids etc; fitted by a capable specialist, then it’s actually very good value.

To the OP, make sure they’re OEM components.

Hmm... If it won't start or go into gear, I'm pretty sure they won't be able to get a reading on it. Did it fail on you whilst driving or on a restart somewhere? Not saying you won't need to change it as it does sound like a collapse, this is not unheard of (I have this myself ATM) My feeling is they are trying it on at that price, probably without the full story.

The non-stat is a safety feature so it cannot start in gear. Mine is presently stuck in 2nd when turned off, pulling both paddles with the ignition on finds a neutral and allows the car to be moved but not started.

I'd be having a chat with SportsItalia before committing to £4k, I'd want a bit more certainty myself. Mine was on 95.7% worn about 1,000 miles earlier. After a blast to Plymouth and even more of a blast into the Picos Europa with 13 other cars it wouldn't pull a gear in the morning! Presently being shipped back to the UK, and a bit of TLC at Matt's.

If the clutch has done 25k miles and it won't start or go into gear do the clutch.

SportsItalia charge £3k plus VAT for it all and it sounds like you will need the clutch position sensor too at circa £200 plus VAT.

What was the conclusion on using the Ferrari 430 clutch, that has been mentioned in the past?

That sounds like it’s eating clutches - it was already 5% through a second clutch at 39k!

Mine was at 50%wear at 28k miles in April so I’m hoping to get at least another 15k miles out of it.

To clarify I don't really have an issue with the ~£4k figure, I know that when I bought it 3 years ago it would need one eventually and the price of everything has gone up. (Last change cost £2.7k)

My query is that if the clutch plate is less than half worn is it really worth changing just because it's already out?

The full quote I got was:

Clutch Position Sensor: £175
Clutch Kit: £1631
Release Bearing: £535
Spigot Bearing: £16
Fluid: £46
Labour: £1482

Total: £3886 (inc VAT)

Are you talking about collapsed tangs? It happened while driving, kept going into neutral but eventually got it going again. Took it to a garage so they could top up the F1 fluid but this didn't really help.

Had a fiddle with the diagnostic tool myself and that really didn't help!!

The garage is a very reputable one so no worries there.

Setting up a brand new clutch reads about 7/8% worn from the off

Interestingly the QP Duo Select ran the same clutch as the 4200…it is a 4200 engine and box then it changed to the same clutch as in a GT MC Shift so by that measure the Gt clutch should fit a 4200
