Cold Start Noise

Thanks Keano, I found in my documents that my engine number is 139714 and the recall is for engine numbers before 148697, but it refers to engines 2007 - 2009 and mine was first registered 04/01/ 2010, so near enough to be counted in the recall?

Am I correct?

Hi John

The doc is strictly speaking only a technical bulletin and where It refers to the model year it is the model year for when it was face lifted. While yours was registered later than mine they are pretty close so safe to assume you are affected. There is another doc i have which is a good overview of many things and explains the model numbers and when the changes were made. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5gx14hy9...nical Training Light-Manual-en-Final.pdf?dl=0

The info i shared first is a notification that Maserati US released and not a UK general recall so you may get some push back on that. Mine was done under warranty by Sytner who sent it to Shiltech (specialist that Gray Paul will know ) and once done the problem was resolved. The camshaft bearings were machined here in the UK and non-return valves were fitted as well as new solenoids to ensure oil is available on startup before pressure builds.

All the tech docs that i have come across and were of interest i have uploaded and put them here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5gx14hy9cx8jor6/AABWPA2lkFJ5Va8zv1VeoAxGa?dl=0

cheers

Keano, thanks so much for your help, I will get in contact with the garage tomorrow and see what they think.

Keano, great bit of research, thanks for stepping in and sharing it mate.

Pat on the back for you!

John, we have learnt with Maserati that just because your car is a 2010, it could have been sitting for years unregistered. Its quite normal for them.

So, the actual build date could have been 2008 or even earlier.

We have seen this with GranSports, they were all produced in 2005/6 but have seen them register on the UK roads as late as 2009.

So even if my QP is a Mk V facelift they could have produced the engine a number of years earlier?

Mine had the same noise/problem when I bought mine this year. I was led to believe it was the variator too and asked my MD to diagnose but they reported nothing unusual (because they probably tried to diagnose when the car was warm).

Either way, this noise is very common with the QP, particularly the Sport GT S

Hi Chris, yep they told me the same thing until I sent them the recording and it took the smile of them as even they knew that a noise like that was not acceptable.

It might be worth your recording the car on cold start up and sending the dealer the sound file.

Well just had a call from the dealers who I bought the car from, the vehicle was taken to GrahamPaul in Nottingham on Wednesday and they have diagnosed that the Variators need fixing and that was the cause of the noise, very surprising as the vehicle has only done 25K, GrahamPaul are not doing it under warranty as there was no recall in the UK, however the dealers I bought the car off are paying for it, I will name them once everything is sorted.

They have ordered a new boot release and think that will sort out locking issues.

Petrol Tank flap has been rectified.

Front parking sensors, two had shorted out so the dealers are sorting that rather than pay GrahamPaul.

Bit of an issue with the USB iPhone socket in the glove box, but as there is a thread Here then will reply in there.

So once the repair work has been sorted then they will get the bodywork and interior finished.

Can't wait to get it back all sorted :)

Well, many of us suspected variators, but yes the mileage is awfully low for that,
Still they are fixing it for you which can only be good - did they give a time scale?
Should be no longer than 10 days for variators anyway
All in all, work in hand at no cost to you so not too bad but annoying!

Thanks Lads, they declined to say how much it was costing them, only that it is being done by GrahamPaul, I haven't been given any time scales, originally it was 1-2 weeks for everything to be done, as long as it is fixed in time for me to get down for the 11th Feb at the Ace Cafe, then great.

Thanks Keano, but have only had the car since the 7th December and I picked this problem up from day one.

Although I could have paid for the car virtually outright I figured best to have some finance on it for 12 months and that way if there is a problem then the finance company can step in, and although the dealer has been excellent if they weren't then the finance company are there and I called them on Monday and they called the dealer on Tuesday and checked that everything was being sorted.

Just some reassurance when buying a potential expensive toy :)

Curious. are they actually replacing the variators or are they doing the modification to the cam bearings - which is a lot cheaper and what fixed mine ?

thx
