Cracked GS wheel

I have just had the car serviced and when the wheels were being checked for cracks and apparently the back left wheel is cracked/damaged to the point of it being unroadworthy.

The wheel is grigio mercury and will have to replaced so was wondering the replacement costs of a second hand back wheel or if they are even available to purchase brand new anymore?

Harsh. I suggest looking for alloy repairers a they can do wonders, even with a wrecked rim. I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to recommend someone any further away from me than 40 miles though.

This is frightening. Where do they crack? Does an annual service include a wheel inspection?
I'm assuming the damage is associated with or the result of some trauma such as hitting a pothole or kerb.

Or do they just crack for seemingly no reason?

Then the remark they seem to be rare as hens teeth to replace?

Gosh. I'm slowly getting more paranoia about driving it! Will have to take the Turbo out more often even though that has the Turbo II Hollow Spokes which are lighter but never hear of any of these cracking at all.

I think If I had a GS I would take the wheels off and fit a set of alternative rims, keeping the GS rims for when the time comes to sell.
They really do have a bad record for being easily damaged.
I'm happy with my FD veloce Corsa wheels (rebadged Forgestar F14's).

What alternatives are out there? And from where?
This is common in Porsche guys who have PCCB ceramic discs that cost £12-£15k to replace due to cracks rather than bring worn out. Those guys fit steel rotors and keep the ceramics boxed and stick them back on the car when they sell or sell with steel and boxed ceramics. I never saw any point in this practice and just avoided buying a car with ceramics. I even drove 100 miles to see a car, to find the dealer didn't tell me it had been fitted with ceramics as after market. I turned straight round, didn't bother looking at the car or the service book - at that time a Turbo could be had for £25k butbto replace those ceramics was 50% of the cost of the car (but only a £6k option if specified from new against a £100k price tag).

Price? One to discuss with Marios at Autoshield I think.
Generally after-market wheels detract buyers cone resale time in my view as most want the car as close to original as possible.
But this might be something to consider and packing the Trofeo wheels until resale time if price is good.

Mike can you buy the forgestar version for cheaper and swap the centre caps.. loving the super deep concave version for the rears and less off a dish at the front would look awesome. But I imagine the super deep version would demand a ridiculously wide tyre. http://www.forgestar.com/wheels/collection/rotary-forged-monoblock-series/f14/

Here are mine. 18" with standard tyres.
I would not be surprised if direct from forgestar or their dealer would be cheaper than FD.
Regarding centre badges, yes mine coming from FD had 'FD Maserati' badges but I bought some 'gel stickers' the correct diameter with the Maserati trident and stuck these over the top, so you could do the same with forgestar centre badges.

My personal view is the wheels are fine on good roads but the skinny tyres and the state of most roads are to blame.

There is only so many times a wheel can have flat spots repaired before they crack.

Personally I would not accepted a welded wheel on my car as the 'perceived' risk is too great and a grand for a new wheel would be safer in MY eyes and give me the confidence to drive at speed.

Yes I know a proper weald is as strong as the metal...but how many of us know if it's done properly?

I have had no cracks in mine...just one new one due to a buckle and one with a mild flat spot.

Thanks all for the advice and contacts

About three year ago when in the first couple of months of my ownership i was driving out of carpark and hit the back left wheel on a curb. i went to the main dealer to have it fixed and they did but I have just had the car serviced at a superb indie who said that the welds holding it together are of shocking quality and it is not really safe to be over 100kmh or so. He recommended that i just replace as the currently repaired wheel is beyond any safe repair in its current state.

Apparently, second hand is about $2-2.5k and Eurospares is about the same or i might look into the link that bruce has kindly provided.

The tyres are currently Pirelli P Zeros at the back and Kumho Ecsta at the front.

Careful with Eurospares they list all parts many of which have been discontinued/no longer available off stock like the classico front grille surround.
