Hi All

Can someone tell me if there is a particular way to connect above to a 4200 battery?

I connected it up the conventional way last night but but still only have the first two amber lights lit.

I have read something in the manual about positive earth batteries but am not sure!

Any advise/help would be much appreciated,

Many thanks

Hi Roger,
Pretty sure our cars are Neg. Earth, have you connected the correct way round, if not that could be the issue..??

Definitely negative earth. I would have thought the CTEK would sense and indicate incorrect connection polarity, though.

Is the battery actually any good?

Its been working/starting fine until a week ago when it wouldnt turn over after being sat in the garage for 3-4 weeks due to the weather.

I read an old post from Trident on the other side about connecting the earth lead from the chrger to the chassis/battery retaining strap bolt so will try that when I get home tonight.

Roger,
I had this myself a couple of months ago. The charger works fine but even after a week it wouldn't charge the battery. It told me my battery had had it and so it was replaced.

Thanks Klive

How did you connect the Ctek charger to your battery?

Usually direct connection is best, then there are no issues with spikes through the full system, straight on to the battery terminals should be fine. Have you tried jump leads from another car, just to get a bit of charge in the battery..??

It's a bit difficult to jump as the car is reversed into the garage and as the battery is in the boot it's a long way from the garage door!

Also, the garage is at the bottom of a slope so would have to tow it out however, if that's what's needed then guess what I'm doing this week end?

Cheers

Which model of Ctek? some you have to step through to the correct setting. Mine will charge the battery from fairly flat in about a day. It's a fair amount of work for the wee thing so try not let it get that low, usually left connected when I'm away over winter and hassle free. I've got one at each end of the garage so doesn't matter which way in :) (Only because I got one free with a car once though.)

Well, got home & the 3rd indicator light on the Ctek charger is now lit which indicates that it is now on step 3 which is the "Absorption" cycle where the battery charges with a declining current to a maximum up to 100% battery capacity.

The manual says that the battery is ready to start the engine when Step 3 is lit! :0)

Think I will leave it going until the morning and try it then.

Will report back tomorrow on progress but in the mean time, many thanks everybody for all your help.

Green light on the Ctek this morning, un-pluged and turned her over.

Started first time albeit after a seconds delay after turning the key! :0)

Took her for a 20 mile blast, left for a few hours & tried again and she started first time.

All working ok but will connect to the Ctek in future if sat in garage for a while!

Thanks again all, Rgd's

4200's are normally not that bad if the battery is sound, mine can sit for a couple of weeks and still start no problem at all.

Agree & never had this problem befor but I think mine sat idle in the garage for 3 or 4 weeks during the very wet spell we had leading up to & over Christmas!
