Diesel in the news again!

What makes you think that that's the 'problem' they are trying to solve?

C

Exactly this. And why now?

Diesels over the last few years have got increasingly better on emissions. Euro IV diesel limits were 3x petrol ones on NOx (0.08 v 0.25). Since then they have converged massively to the point where Euro VI limits are 0.06 for petrol and 0.08 for diesel.

Also a lot of them (politicians) are citing the VW cheat device. There are many reports that small, downsized petrols also far exceed the NOx levels, but of course this doesn't fit the agenda.

Aswell as the above, the BBC were reporting that diesels of a certain age would be paying this "T" toxicity charge of £10 a day in London. This is true. However, same aged petrols will pay this also so how biased was that!

As I originally said... why let the truth get in the way of a good story as far as the media is concerned. As for government and local authorities, why let truth get in the way of revenue. For example City of Westminster are going to introduce an additional charge if a Diesel driver parks his car at a meter in central London, regardless of its age or emissions.
A number of years ago those in power realised like any disreputable bunch of sharks, that the motorist could provide a new and easy revenue stream. And the best bit, they discovered how easy it was to rip off the driver using technology and a few threatening letters. From that point on they have never looked back.
Basically legalised extortion!!

To be fair there are a lot of older diesels around that deliver a smoke screen on acceleration. They could do something about that without too much trouble.

So a scrappage scheme of some sort wouldn't go amiss. I think it's more like to be a completely unscientific attack on, diesels, including new ones though.

Find it odd that councils are going to tax them and national government is going to 'assist' with some form of support...no doubt a scrappage schem for the public to buy cheep Korean inports widening out trade gap even further like it did last time.

My personal thoughts is that scrappage should only apply to EU built vehicles at both ends.

As I have said, the motorist is an easy target. All cars petrol and diesel wil eventually be in the same boat. Then the 'battery disposal charge' for electric cars will be rolled out...
I'm lucky in that my Ghibli although reg in July 15 is one of the first Euro 6 compliant, and even for those who are not the fuel economy benefits will compensate.
Incidentally I did ring TFL, and they handn't got a clue..!!!!

I can see the battery disposal charge coming before too long. Once they can't get enough money out of the fossil fuel drivers.

Hi Keith, does that mean you have an adblu urea tank? If so how often do you have to fill it?

In 5000miles I have used 25%. I believe the tank is located under the boot and is filled by removing the spare wheel.
The level can be shown on the instrument panel, but clearly unless your a high mileage driver, it's not something you need to worry about that often.

Thanks Keith. Mine is one of the last Euro V's so doesn't have the adblue. This whole thing is a farce. Any new taxation / charging on diesels should be from now on

Just wait for the battery disposal tax!

We get many retrospective taxes but sometimes new taxes are actually cheaper than the old regime. I have two long term ownership cars both with £500+ car tax pa. If I could buy them again then car tax would be lower and would drop after year six to £140 pa.

As for the diesel reaction it was inevitable as soon as VW were outed and will continue to run and run. I have a Euro V diesel (a car not sold then as a petrol) and expect more restrictive news on where I can take it.
