Ditching Skyhook?

The one thing that bugs me about the GS more than any other is - no, not the gearbox, which I (whisper) quite like, but the suspension...which is just rubbish, as has oft been remarked. Has anyone out there ditched Skyhook and tried something else? Is that even possible? Every time I read about the Bumpy Road button on post 430 Ferraris I think...'someone must have found a way... I'm working up to selling my beloved motorbike to fund work on the Ratty so if I'm doing rust and paint I might as well go the whole hog.

What are you trying to achieve? Nearly all of the modifications will make it worse on bumpy roads

Skyhook is ok for me, tackles the speed bumps smoothly unlike the Mrs' Nissan and the Daughter's C1 which both bounce so much I hit my bonce on the roof.....

Skyhook on my QPV is just the nicest thing ever.
It presents me with this syrupy smooth but rather floaty ride on the straights. Just the sort of thing I have almost instinctively avoided in my cars for decades. Why have I avoided it? Easy. Its because cars that are syrupy floaty on the straights can't get round corners other than at very low speed and low lateral g. But the nicest thing ever is that when I throw my 2 ton syrupy floaty QPV into a corner it turns to steel. Smooth, faultless, flowing steel. And it goes round like its on rails. It corners like my old lightweight TVR. And in between its syrupy smooth and floaty, fit for the president of Italy. So I rather like it.
Skyhook is the nicest thing ever.
Please, please think twice before you take it off the car.

There is a road near me that undulates. Its a shocker of a road. The TVR used to bottom on it at speeds over 30 mph. The QPV does not, but the ride becomes intolerably active. Lots of bucking like a bronco. A quick touch of the "Sport" button sorts it out though. The ride becomes a little firm/jolty but the intolerable bucking has gone. The car has the undulations completely under control and any speed. If I find the car has chosen a lower gear than I would have done and there is too much howling from that magnificent engine (remember, I might want quiet: I could be in serene mode. I don't go everywhere, all the time in howling mode) I just paddle it up a gear or two. Sorted.
Please don't take the skyhooks off your car, Marwood. If you re new to the car, drive it for a few months and get to know it. Then make your mind up and keep the skyhooks.

Skyhook on a GS isn’t the same as on a QP. In my opinion the sport on a GS seems a bit hard. But I’ve never lived with one. Plenty like them. But then plenty like daniel o'donnell

I would start with changing the wheels to 18" to get a softer ride although you compromise the complete GS package

Maybe fork out £5k for some ultra rare 18s from the Trofeo race car.

For the longest time I thought my car had Skyhook until I looked underneath and saw the regular yellow shocks. (I thought all GS had it)

They are naturally a firm and harsh ride, since I didn’t have Skyhook I made the logical upgrade to the KW coilovers. Some members here have spoken good about them.

I could never understand why on late 3200GT's you could put the car into sport mode but leave the already hard damper skyhook settings in normal

Apparently some Ferrari 360's which have the same suspension system as later 3200's are able to do this..

Pretty much all modern Ferraris have the option to do that, it’s called the “bumpy road” button and it on the steering wheel. It give you sport or race mapping, open valves and a slightly more compliant suspension. It’s really good in poorer quality tarmac. Keeps your fillings intact.

That would have been be perfect, shame it came 10 years too late!

Thank you, Oneball, for educating me re the differences between QPV and Gransport Skyhook installations.
Much appreciated. I have much to learn and I'll try to remember this one.
But they really are lovely on the QPV.

They should rename it UK road button. Anything other than a main road round here is full of pot holes and sunken iron works.

The roads are not going to get any better in the next few years post covid as im sure spending will be cut.

I think most 4200 / GS owners would love the option of sport mode throttle / gear changes and softer suspension setting for side roads in normal mode. Sport mode could then be throttle / gear change and suspension adjusted to the sport settings as it is now.

Maybe something AV or sports italia could look at in the future as a Mod.

I really cant think of any reason why anyone would want a lazy gear change with the exception of snow or icy conditions which the 4200/GS has the ice button for that purpose.
