Dou-select clutch

What exactly is the weakness with it? Is it too small/weak, change slipping it too much, other clutches on big manual cars reputedly last longer.

Or is it sort of fixed now with reports here and on ML of much longer life?

Having had the transmission failure icon a few times when I first got the car it’s the one thing that freaks me out. As it turned out my issue was just clutch position sensor!

It's more that the software can't handle feathering the clutch as well as a human.

There's lots of apocryphal tales about always driving in manual / sport mode which reduces shift time and slippage, but there's no really significant data <cue loads of people claiming it must be so because their clutch has lasted ages :) >

Also the early days of the cars where people were assumed to drive them in automatic mode round town may not have helped....

Software has been updated over time though so assuming clutch friction components have not diminished and probably improved as has the software perhaps the weak link isn’t such a weak link anymore?

Just thinking out loud really,

I don't think the software has been updated for a long time. Coupled with the fact that the shift was (I think) made slower in later versions, apart from the GS. But I could be utterly wrong with that. I know the original version on a TCU is much sought after, not least for the blip on downshift ;)

Oooo, I fancy a downshift blip. I was taking the ferry from Dublin Port once and drew up to the booth, guy looked at his papers, and said ‘doesn’t sound like a Maserati’.

So I had to put handbrake on, pull both paddles, and give it some oomph.

Then he said ‘ohhh, that’s a Maserati!’

Lot of effort to make it sound cool.

I firmly believe the duo-select made the QP a unique proposition. A very engaging, analogue experience which cannot be replicated by anything automatic or with DSG.
It really is a proper sports saloon with a sound track to match.
I do have the DBW installed and it does make a difference to shift speed, but even without it the shift is still quicker than I could manage manually.

The rev matching in sport mode on downshifts is a cheeky little treat that I'll never get bored of hearing..
