I have a broken engine, bad piston on cylinder 4 and I will swap the engine to a another one that I have got.
My question is if it possible to split the automatic gearbox before I take the engine out? The service manual say that you take both gearbox and engine out, but it shuld be easyer to split the engine and gearbox and only take the engine in and out? Anyone that have done this?

I can show you a broken piston, any idea how this happend?

Some kind of pre ignition or detonation might have damaged the piston?

Certainly worth carefully checking the fueling, ignition and Ecu/knock system I would imagine if and when you fit another engine? Might have ran too lean and or hot and started to melt the piston?

I'm sure someone else can confirm...

I believe....and I could be wrong, it only comes out as one unit as there is not enough room in the tunnel to slide it back and disengage it.

It comes out as one pretty easy, from memory, disconnecting the gear selector was the biggest pig...on axle stands in my garage and that was the manual. The auto is an even bigger gearbox so I would take it out as one:

Just take your time, it’s not rocket science it’s just an engine.

I have the manual to remove the engine, Pm me your email and I’ll send it to you.

You will need a suitable engine crane and some medium high axle stands to get the car high enough off the ground so there is clearance to swing the unit enough to get it out plus something to protect the unit drag over the front slam panel. I used cardboard.
