Ever had professional rustproofing done?

Have any of you ever had your classic Maserati professionally rustproofed, so underbody, plus wax in cavities, pillars, behind wheel-arch liners, etc? If so who did you use and what were the results like?

I'm thinking about getting this done (even through the Ghibli is remarkably clean, I'd like to keep her rust-free so prevention is better than cure) but can't make my mind up on service provider! Thanks.

I did a XK8 and a Defender myself with Dinitrol

It was dead easy if not a bit messy but you need access to a ramp

They do it compressor based and aerosols , it comes with a spray gun if you buy the compressor cans and works best if you soak the cans in hot water prior to spraying it on

I sold the 90 to a friend 3 years ago and it still looks good underneath

As with any job it's all about preparation though dinitrol does have anti rust in it

I'm a second for Dintrinol - Used it on a VW camper and it is easy to apply and sticks well.

I don't have access to a ramp (or even an open space for that matter - London living for you). So am planning to get it done professionally, concur on Dinitrol it does seem to be better than Waxoyl from tests. Just wondered if anyone had tried the following:

A neighbour worked for vauxhall in the late 60s , they stored the bare steel they pressed the panels from outside , under cover up open to the air, they were rusty when they painted them

On the subject of rust here is a photo of my front n/s subframe at the mot last week!

I have had it repaired and have ordered a new frame from euro spares, when the clutch needs doing I will get the whole lot done at the same time. Don't look forward to that bill!image.jpg

It looks like it was corrosion from inside coming out.

Any thoughts on how to treat the new one?

Hey gp79- that's unlucky!

aren't MOT's great?

If you get another one- is it new or 2nd hand?

you need to have a it powder coated. But as said before, preparation is everything. Find yourself a painter who is prepared to take it right back and give it a really good paint job.

After that, you need to get some underbody washes on the go to keep this stuff clean.

I've repainted as much as I could get to of my subframes, ON the car. Not ideal, but what's happened to you there, was certainly on an exposed surface.

Wow, that is a bit of a surprise. I have been thinking about getting a used frame, having it dipped and the e-coated as the surface corrosion bugs me, but based on this it looks like it is needed to keep internal corrosion at bay too!

Gone for a new one so certain there is no internal corrosion - well as certain as you can be! Then maybe get the new one galvanised so the inside is protected?

I have been under the car and removed all the loose powder coat and treated to rust converter.

Over the winter I think I'll drop the rear subframe and go over that properly.

Only a 1000 miles since last MOT so expected a formality!

Cheers Greg

Yes was surprised and a bit gutted!

It looked a bit scabby on the outside but never expected that!

Trouble is the front one is a time consuming job to remove / replace then treat. if I do it with the a clutch job at least some of the labour is 'saved'

Was looking at waxoyle but think that just masks the problem, looks a mess and makes working on the underside very messy.

Anyway it has been cut out and an insert put in so now passed, you wouldn't know apart from the **** MOT history check!

Cheers Greg

Hot dip galvanising would be a bit hit and miss on the inside if it's tubular , air pockets

Best bet would be filling it with Dinitrol cavity wax or something similar before it was fitted

Or get it e coated which is the industry standard undercoat and the reason modern cars don't rust like they did 30 years ago

I know a company in the Durham area that do it

Thats an example why I won't take mine out in winter with salt on the roads!
Fortunately the previous owner did the same and the underside is just a little dusty with no corrosion at all.

Very nice Mike but you have missed a few bits.
Thats what NZ new cars look like just dry dust.
I have a 76 Mini Clubman and a 1980 Mini Special here never welded and no surface corrosion.
SALT is the KILLER in the UK.

I've never washed it underneath, well, jet washed it yes but really could do with sponging it with soap and water and then applying some clear wax protection when dry.
Yes I really do hate salt on our british roads.
