First time Maserati owner in need of help!

Hi to this Maserati Forum - I am a new member

I have recently acquired my first Maserati - a 2005 Quattroporte with 22k miles.

Having driven this vehicle away from the dealership, I am aware of a 'squeal' which sounds as though it is emanating from the rear axle, almost every time I apply slight pressure to the accelerator.

My vehicle causes heads to turn, sadly due to the noise rather than the vehicle's prowess.

Can anyone offer advice on what could be the cause of this noise?
Suspecting it is something to do with bearings/clutch, at what mileage should a the clutch have been/be replaced?
How can I get this looked into around the Gatwick area?

My problem is that my car is going to Spain on Friday for the rest of the year, and although I have a one year warranty, it's not of much use to me if my car breaks down whilst there.

ANY advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

Welcome Trav_La
We have all been first time owners and this is the best place to be.
Its where i learnt more about my car after buying on a whim.
There is a lot of advice on clutch noise here and i know others will comment.
Clutch life the million dollar question.
Phil.

If its coming from underneath by the rear axle i doubt very much thats its the auxillary belt , and as yet not come across the belt sliiping squeal on these cars , what year is your car,

If its only on pulling away in 1st and 2nd , i suspect it will be the dreaded spiggot bearing , its a small bearing behind the clutch , not mega detrinmental but i agree extremely annoying , they are only around £15 to buy but its a lot of labour time wise to do , they are usually changed with the clutch and i believe there is an uprated part for it now, Should be ok to get it done under warranty FOC , and depending on what condition you clutch is in % worn that is i would probably buy a new clutch and have that fitted at the same time separately,

The quoted time for a clutch change is 10 hours and for a spiggot bearing around 9 hours so it make sense

Ive never heard of any detrimental consequences from the spiggot bearing going , just that annoying squeal on take off, worth getting confirmed tho , there are maserati dealers in spain tho that could cope with the job, if its under waranty then its down to the warranty company to get it done wherever

Hope this helps

Hi - and thanks for comments so far.

The vehicle is a 2005, and the sound is defintiely coming from the rear.

I used to own an F1 360, which recommended clutch change before 10,000 - don't know if the Quattroporte has any recommendations for when this should be done.

I would ideally like to get this addressed before I leave the UK. The warranty I have is a warranty company, and the cover is comprehensive (up to £2,000 per job) - but I doubt it could be utilized in Spain.

Anyone know anyone authorised to do this work around the Gatwick area? I read a forum (before I realised it was in the USA) which mades some comments about needing to electronically adjust clutch, etc.

I agree that if it's a bearing - may as well do the clutch at the same time.

22,000 miles on the car . .

Sounds to me like its on its first clutch , the % worn can be electronically checked by the sd2/3 diagnostic , and the perameters can be reset electronically aswell , any dealer /independant should be able to do this for you ,

The % worn check is only approximate and a guide , depending on how the cars are driven varying mileages have been quoted for these clutches from as little as 15K miles to 45K miles , my gransport is still on its original clutch and on 45k miles tho it has been slipping since 42K miles , Gatwick area , your nearest indie would be Giallo not far from East Grinsted , Mathew should be able to put you staright , mention my name and the forum it may help

regards loz

Hi Trav_la
Sorry to hear you have an unwelcome noise with your QP,
unfortunately, only having a week before going to Spain does not leave much time to get it looked at...
I have a 2004 QP, she had a clutch replaced at 27,500 miles...but there is no recommended mileage when
it should be changed...the diagnostic readings (SD2 or 3) for clutch wear are just estimates...and I would not
change the clutch just on the reading...it should depend on how the gears engage and how she drives.
I had a squeak coming from the rear of my car, which turned out to be the rubbers on the anti-roll bar!
I hope you can get it looked at and a simple solution found,
Regards,
Enzo.

I am with Loz on this one, spigot bearing came shooting into my mind as I started to read your post. Of course if you are 100% sure its coming from the rear and it is making the spigot bearing noise, then it is possible that its another bearing in the gearbox, probably the first motion shaft bearing, but still think you should look at the clutch first.

Giallo not far from East Grinsted

I am off here to camp outside their door for when they open today.

Thanks for the advice everyone

On another note - I am absolutely thrilled with this car (apart from the noise) - the performance leaves you breathless, and even my little girl on the rear of the car (hence the Quattroporte) sucks in her breath as I apply a gentle touch to the accelerator . .

Thats what we like to hear........a man putting his Maserati before all else.......................................................................family excepted of course!!!

Just make sure your little precious bundle in the back doesn't learn how to hyper-ventilate prematurely!!!!

Hope its something straightforward.

Update . . . . . update . . . . update

So, I arrived at the forementioned location today and was met by Matt - nice chap. Advised me he could take it in today (hurrah) - but that I may not get it back until Wednesday (boooo) . . . but I managed to get him to agree to Tuesday (hurrah). Turns out is IS the spigot bearing, and I also need to stop the car pulling to the left, as well as solve some knocking issue, and finally remove a dead spider from the inside light cluster above the dash . . . .

Thankfully, it's all being covered on warranty - and that which is not on warranty, is being covered by the nice chaps where I bought it from - Simon Furlonger (not advertising but nice gestures should be recognised). They stepped up before I even told them (Giallo had called them) and advised they would cover what the warranty doesn't! How often does that ever happen??

So, very pleased overall. I know it's a five year old car, and I know cars have issues. I am not upset or angry, just resigned to the the fact that maintenance is critical in keeping up super performance!

So, now we are finalizing our travel plans - was going to drive down, but instead taking the ferry Santander - and will rip through Spain as fast as the Guarda allow :) . . . .

Anyone travelling down towards Cartegena should look me up down there . . . .

Final question. I have a baby - eight months old. I need a car seat for my QP . . . . I havent been able to find one online anywhere - is there a baby seat specially made for the QP?

Again, thanks for all the responses!

Glad its worked out for , very positive response by the sounds of it , and the diagnostic spot on eh

Yes Maserati do there very own model complete with embossed logo , how cool is that just under the £200 mark i believe , if you have expensive taste then why should't you lilun , and what a pose to boot , matching child seat
