That is impressive!

Umm they are *always* labelled. And if not, the negative will have one large black cable, almost certainly straight to the chassis. The positive will probably have a chunk of stuff very near to the terminal.....

Empty = I suspect toast. ;)

Oh, FFS, are you talking electrics, Chris?

It is a bit dark where the battery is but did notice one end with a lead bolted to the chassis, and presumed the end with all the bits on on it plus the plastic cover would be the positive.

And I know how annoying it is when the thread never gets closed..
After 24 hours the charger is reporting that the battery is now fully charged.

Do we think I need to replace it anyway?

I have had loads of batteries including the Strad go completely flat to the point of not even unlocking the doors.
Ctech recon function for a day or two and all good.
The Strad is still good for at least three weeks.

I'm going to be leaving the QPV on the drive for a few weeks soon, but I'm not worried, as I can always just call the RAC.... (qv)

To be fair this is the first time I've ever had battery problems through my inactivity in the 10 years I've had the car. Yes, the battery has been replaced a few times, so this one is one may be one the ones I've had the longest - will look it up.

i fit battery disconnects on all the motors i don't regularly use including the modern motors that can sit for a couple of weeks, just takes a couple of seconds to disconnect and connect once fitted , even in tight spaces

Well, I was expecting to plug in the Aldi/Lidl battery conditioner yesterday morning to see if the battery had held it's charge.
Turns out, the conditioner itself has expired under the stress of revitalising the battery. I checked the voltage using a multimeter - 12.34V - Probably quite low in retrospect.

However, the car seems to start without issues.........

I'll venture to Lidl/Aldi and see if they have any conditioners.

NADA

OK I'll go to Halfords. B*****. Forgot my wallet

Back home for lunch and then back out Halfords. This time with wallet.

Beep - Beep. ASR, MSP, blah blah - drive slowly to dealer - again!

One NOCO Genius 5 purchaced and plugged in.

Battery not good < 25%

So, Is it the battery or the alternator? Alternator replaced May 2018, battery replaced in Jan 2018.

or it's a bearing gone as well... Had 4 of those, one of the front ones has been replaced twice.

Can you remember how many days the car went unused for since you had it on charge.

A new battery will show voltage of between 12.75 and 12.95 volts approx.

The chargers will treat a battery showing 12 volts as having zero % left and above 12.75 to 12.95 volts as being 100% hence your seeing 25% at 12.34 volts.

When you start you car a low battery will dip to about 11 to 11.5 volts and will take a good run above idle speed about 20 mins to put enough charge back into your battery to be a higher voltage than your start point.

Rough guide it probably takes 40 mins to 1 hout to fully recharge your battery from the altetnator.

No running times on your post as to how long the car was running for between restarts. 2 or 3 restarts and only a short run inbetween could well have pushed your battery below the 12.34 volts you started with.

Short answer is it sounds like your battery is tired and getting towards end of useful life. You could well be fine for the rest of this year just putting it on charge once a week. If we get a cold snap now or the back end of the year it may be enough to kill your battery off. I suspect your battery at the moment is only holding enough charge for 7 days before its very low. Any short trips will just compound the issue.

I have one of these fitted to my battery so i can check via bluetooth current voltage of the battery without having to open the car. It will also do a crank test and altetnator test for you and easily moved to anothe car if needed. Hunt around you can get them for less or you can spend more if you want a visual display version.

Hi @spkennyuk
It was 5 days and measured after one crank and a short journey.
The NOCO seemed to get back to full charge in a 3-4 hours, but I didn't leave it on all night. reconnected this morning, so we'll see what transpires.

Hi Eb

You really need to leave the Noco connected for 24 hours so it can run through all 9 phases to try and recover and optimise your battery.

The last three phases take the longest as small pulse of current are sent to the battery to slowly raise the charge from 70% to 100%

Stages 1 and 2 test the battery.
Stage 3 is desulfation and recovery.
Stage 4 is a slow soft charge
Stage 5 and 6 are a more intensive charge or bulk charge.
Stages 7 and 8 are a low voltage slow charge
Stage 9 is the maintenance cycle which will kick in to top up the battery when needed.

Your battery is loosing roughly 0.075 volts per day by the looks of it when not on charge so your looking at around 7 to 10 days between charges before the battery is at 12volts or zero % . The Noco may well improve this for you with its desulfation / recovery cycles.

OK
I reconnected it this morning and left it until after lunch when I had to run an errand - so short journey
It got as far as pulsating green, Bulk charge complete , optimising battery for extended life
The voltage was 12.64.
I'll reconnect later and leave it on to ty and get to solid green 100% charged and maintaining it

So the scores on the doors.

Completely "full" 12.83V on Monday at 10am after 24+ hours of charging. Sat 9am 12.11V.

A drop of 0.144V per day.

Is the battery goosed?

I've got it on charge again

Probably need a new battery to be on the safe side
